Pest control
premises for any holes or gaps. Block any cracks and crevices on the exterior of the building to prevent pests from entering.
n Keep vegetation around the building trimmed back to at least a couple of feet from your building perimeter and clean up leaves and sticks. Keep perimeter debris to a minimum – items stacked against building walls can provide nesting sites and hiding places for pests, and cover while they try and work their way into your property.
n When selecting garden plants, avoid surrounding your building with low lying bushes that can potentially conceal rat burrows and rubbish – select upright plants that leave the surrounding ground area open and viewable so that burrows and pest activity can be more easily detected.
n Remember that although climbing plants on buildings can look nice, they also assist insects, spiders, and rodents to climb up buildings and gain access at higher levels. Tree branches close to buildings can also help squirrels gain access to loft spaces where they can be incredibly destructive.
n Add door sweeps and bristle strips to close any gaps.
n Make sure that all doors close tightly at all
times and that they do not get carelessly left open.
Deliveries n Regularly check deliveries for pests or evidence of pests such as droppings, chew marks, or exoskeletons (shed skins) before bringing them into the building.
n Unpack deliveries and dispose of any empty boxes before bringing them indoors.
n Keep storage racks a few inches from the wall and raised above the floor level (to allow for inspection of areas behind and underneath) and for ease of cleaning.
Interior n Make sure floors are cleaned regularly and free of litter, food, and other debris.
n Vacuum, sweep, and mop all floors in sensitive areas on a daily basis.
n Inspect and clean floor drains on a regular basis. Flies will feed and breed in unclean or blocked drains.
n Cover and seal bulk food-storage containers and rubbish containers.
n Keep rubbish bins lined and empty them regularly.
n Make sure no food is left out anywhere overnight.
