a graceful centrepiece. Here, its elegant presence stands out and offers a social hub for those looking to enjoy themselves. Although retaining elements of the past is important, we also work to make sure that people living there today feel at home, too.
A Nightingale sings in Clapham Common In 2020, we worked on Audley Retirement’s first central London development. Made up of 94 one and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, Nightingale Place in Clapham Common has since won two awards at the Health Investors Senior Housing Awards and was a Healthcare & Wellness Design finalist in the SBID International Design Awards. Though its residents are likely to be longtime Londoners, it was simply impossible, impractical, and inappropriate to reproduce a buzzing metropolitan atmosphere, least of all by a project designed to encourage peace. Nevertheless, we attempted to create

a little slice of bustling London inside Nightingale Place. Since later living can, at times, feel static, we incorporated the theme of travel to remind residents of long trips, short commutes, and all the places they may have explored. We dressed the chairs in the entrance in a tight, retro fabric that is reminiscent of Enid Marx, who designed the iconic fabrics for the London Underground, but we ensured the pattern was far from jarring or drastic. By doing this, it was easier for us to recreate memories of London – whether that be running for a bus or packing onto a busy train – and decorated the surrounding interiors with other iconic tropes from modern British history. The end result? Later living where residents are calm, comfortable, and happy – because they are exactly where they belong.
