Resident activities

Weight management is an issue to many, and with the historic UK health/fitness focus on the ability of aerobic activity to solve this, it is no wonder that muscle training/growth has not been included in our range of options. Yet the fact is, for most people, the number of calories consumed in a gym environment on cardio equipment is actually very little.

That does not mean these exercises are

worthless, the benefits might just be different. If one becomes stronger, and increases muscle mass, this of itself is a very effective fat-burning resource - metabolism increases, and one burns more fat, even at rest. It might even be that weight increases-

gained muscle being heavier/denser than lost fat - but posture might improve, shape will improve, skin condition almost certainly so, and with all of this, mood is likely to benefit.

By and large, the heart is a reactive muscle, it responds or reacts in partnership with the lungs to the demands placed on it by the other (moving) muscles in our body. If the other muscles have become weak, the heart cannot simply compensate for this by working harder. Many older adults still have sufficient aerobic capacity to be able

to perform everyday tasks, what they lack is sufficient muscular condition. You cannot travel very far or very far comfortably - even with a full tank of petrol - if the tyres are flat, and your suspension is shot to pieces. For anyone that has ever done an endurance event, you know that it takes several days to recover, and that it accepted as being part of the challenge; if someone has become frail then everything starts to become an endurance event. We would love to see the UK become
