Residential, nursing, and dementia care are all offered at Broomfield Village. In addition, having Broomfield Hospital literally next door presents Principle with an opportunity. “Due to the size of – and our proximity to – the hospital, specialist care will be a part of our journey,” says Ashish. “The big opportunity for us, especially with the facilities that we have in the hydrotherapy pool, exercise studio, and in-house physiotherapy suite, is post-operative rehab. It’s a brilliant service to be able to offer people. We’ve got an eight bed community [on one side of the home] that we think would do really well for a private post-op rehab community.”
The latest integrated technology Unsurprisingly, the Broomfield Village team will be using the latest tech. Ascom’s nurse call system integrates with Nourish care software, while medication management software comes courtesy of MED e-care. Also integrating with Nourish is a communication app supplied by Altra, which enables team members, residents, and family members to upload and view updates and images, a little like Facebook. In terms of safety monitoring, Broomfield Village does not have CCTV inside the building, and there is currently no standardised safety solution such as acoustic monitoring or similar, although Ashish anticipates that as the number of residents increases and the team to resident ratio changes, the home’s reliance on such safety technology will necessarily increase. Meanwhile, Ascom supplies a range of sensor mats and the like, which Principle can deploy as needed.
At the moment, with the home having only just opened and the team still finding their feet, Ashish is keen to keep things as simple as possible: “It’s about making sure that we’re not introducing so many things that it becomes overwhelming for the team,” he says.

Despite an unmistakably high-end finish, there is definitely a homely feel to Broomfield Village in the thoughtful

the home, and residents are free to invite their families to dinner, which, it is hoped, should encourage residents to fully enjoy the dining experience at the home, aiding social interaction and boosting residents’ wellbeing.
Elsewhere, Broomfield Village is dotted with arts and craft rooms, music rooms containing record players and vinyl, areas for potting plants, and so on.
Finally, Broomfield Village also has an end of life suite – a sizeable space where loved ones can gather (and, if necessary, spend the night) in order to be close to their loved one.

touches and details that can be seen throughout.
Perhaps surprisingly, however, there is nothing about the home that suggests that this is not a new build – had I not known that Principle had regenerated an older home, I would have been none the wiser. All the features one might expect from a new, high spec care home are present and correct – wide corridors, spacious bedrooms with en suite wet rooms, beautifully landscaped grounds, and communal areas such as quiet lounges and ‘destination zones’ towards the ends of corridors, to name but a few. Directly beyond the reception area sits the home’s Garden Café, which offers drinks and refreshments as well as French doors opening out onto the home’s landscaped gardens and putting green. On either side of the Garden Café are Broomfield Village’s Toy Shop – where residents’ grandchildren can avail themselves of an extensive selection of books and toys during their visit – and the Corner Shop, where residents can help themselves to snacks and sweets, or perhaps grab an ice cream and popcorn before making their way next door to the home’s cinema, complete with comfy seating an impressively large screen.
Also on the ground floor is the eight-bed suite that will become Broomfield Village’s rehab community. A self-contained area with its own communal spaces and dining room, the community is situated next to the home’s exercise studio and hydrotherapy pool. While use of the latter is not included in the home’s residential fees, sessions in the pool with Principle’s in-house physiotherapist come in at a very reasonable £100, and will form a core component of the home’s rehabilitation offering in due course.

Ashish and Principle Care Homes have a clear vision for the future. As Ashish puts it: “It’s a great sector to be in; to be able to give back and make a difference and create fantastic environments.”
Broomfield Village is just the first of these fantastic environments, and a very effective statement of intent. We look forward to seeing what comes next from Principle Care Homes.
