by experience, clinicians, estates and facilities teams, designers, and other professionals from home and abroad, exploring ideas, debating challenges, and providing valuable insights. The exhibition, meanwhile, offers the opportunity to discover and explore new and innovative products, as well as the tried and tested, with many new exhibitors joining for 2022. You’ll find a full conference introduction and programme on pages 11-15, along with information on the highlights from some of this year’s exhibitors on pages 17-21. We’re also delighted to confirm that the

Awards ceremony will be back for another year, and will include two brand new categories: ‘Research and Education’, and ‘Outside Spaces’. This will carry forward the ‘open to all’ format from 2021, with drinks and networking for anyone interested in joining at no cost. You’ll likely notice some new aspects to

the show too, such as the poster case study walls, displaying an array of recovery-led mental health spaces and roundtable events. Thank you to all who contributed project submissions. This year’s event will also be the springboard for our DiMHN/BRE

Journal of the Design in Mental Health Network Encouraging wider product testing

Informed Choices product testing pledge. DiMHN has partnered with the Building

Research Establishment (BRE), and worked with over 100 experts from the field during the past seven years to create a global testing method for all products used in mental healthcare settings. Going forward, we’ll be actively encouraging NHS Trusts and private healthcare providers to: l Ask suppliers to provide DiMHN/BRE Informed Choices product performance assessment. Initially this will be encouraged, with preferential consideration given to products backed by independent performance assessment.

l By 2025, to make the performance assessment a mandatory requirement for supply to their organisation, allowing time for all suppliers to test their products. We’ll be discussing this in more detail

shortly, but if you have any questions on June’s event in Coventry, or the testing pledge, feel free to contact either myself or the DiMHN’s Testing and Innovation lead, Jonathan Campbell, on +44 7809 870690. We’d be happy to talk things through with you. See you next month.

11 Design in Mental Health 2022 event preview 5 News

The Design in Mental Health 2022 event at the Coventry Building Society Arena in June will provide an excellent chance for attendees to catch up with latest developments and news. We look ahead to some of the anticipated highlights, with a particular focus on this year’s conference.

23 New multi-level facility to replace ‘dormitory’ unit

Robin Graham, an associate director at Gilling Dod Architects, describes the practice’s design of Park House – a new inpatient mental health facility at North Manchester General Hospital that will replace one of the largest remaining dormitory-based such units in the UK, and will also be one of the first multi-level mental health units with roof gardens in the north of England.

29 Balancing aesthetics with safety and security

Jason Brown, director of Design and Development at Knightsbridge Furniture, takes a look at some of the key considerations – including the challenge of balancing appealing aesthetics and a therapeutic, non-institutional feel with safety and security – when designing and manufacturing furniture for mental healthcare settings.

33 Creating a safer and securer environment at St George’s

Allan Aikman, Product (Design) manager at Pinpoint, a specialist provider of staff personal alarm systems, describes how the company met the need for ‘a 100 per cent reliable, easy-to-use’ such system for St George’s Hospital in Stafford, the main treatment centre for acute mental health issues in South Staffordshire.
