DiMH 2022 PREVIEW
Multi-award-winning window continually improved
Britplas will showcase its ‘multi-award- winning’ Safevent window, with both horizontal and vertical sliding models on display. Since its invention in 2006, the Safevent has been installed in hundreds of UK mental healthcare facilities, and Britplas says the ‘ground-breaking window design’ has been continually improved, evolving through eight models, while retaining its core features – anti-ligature design, natural light and ventilation, and patient control. Recent improvements have included the
introduction of GlassShield, a new impact gasket, and the patented Multask handle, which provides the functionality of an opening winder, patient thumb lock, and staff lock, within a single, stainless steel, anti-ligature component. Beyond windows, Britplas supplies a number of ‘unique and complementary’ low-impact products which ‘enhance the safety and security of mental health environments’. Shown will be its Fortress 80 Fencing,
which provides security and safety for service-users and staff, but also allows the incorporation of large-scale detailed artwork onto its cloaking. Britplas says many facilities are specifying natural scenery prints to help create therapeutic and relaxing environments. Also being shown is Fortress Climb-Guard – a curved aluminium profile which can be fitted to low roof pitches and wall areas to help prevent people from climbing onto them and absconding or injuring themselves.
Engaging with clients for the optimal solution
For a number of years, the team at STJ Projects has manufactured and installed secure and safe doorsets for challenging environments, such as seclusion suites, Section 136 spaces, and similar settings. The company said: “The client
requirements, and the development of each individual doorset, can vary considerably, and the STJ team is always happy to engage with clients to learn about the specific setting’s needs, which allows us to manufacture and fit the right doorset.
“Designing, manufacturing, and supplying, anti-ligature hardware that works alongside items such as lock- back frames is critical, and ensures that all doorset functions perform fully and safely. Small aspects, such as how much a particular handle protrudes from a door face, can significantly impact on
Anti-ligature curtain track and mounting plates
Yewdale says its team will take the opportunity of the DiMH 2022 exhibition to talk through the benefits of some new anti-ligature products. Of particular interest will be its new K2500 safety curtain track (pictured), designed for mental health settings where violence is a risk. It fits flush to the wall as a permanently fixed track to eliminate the risk of removal and use as a weapon. Yewdale said: “Even though the K2500 is a fixed track, the curtain track does not lose its anti-ligature status. Under excessive load, the curtain will separate from the

anti-ligature gliders, which come as standard. The curtain is easily re-attached to the curtain gliders, which cannot be removed from the track.”
Yewdale will also showcase its new fixed mounting plate, which holds accessories such as soap dispensers and toilet roll holders using magnets to prevent ligature risk. It is fixed to the wall via anti-tamper screws, and the accessories attached to the plate using magnets. The previous version was attached to the wall via a magnet, but there were reports of some individuals pulling off the mounting plate and accessory and using them as a weapon. The fixed mounting plate ensures that only the accessory comes away from the wall.

the doorset performing if it then doesn’t allow the door to be locked back into its frame. This might typically be addressed by manufacturing the lock-back frame at angles to allow for ironmongery to sit behind the door without clashing with the wall. “In Coventry we will be showcasing a typical doorset and components for mental healthcare settings, plus other examples of our offerings for both acute and mental healthcare.”
The ‘original one-stop-shop’
Anti-ligature shop (ALS) is celebrating its tenth anniversary as ‘the original one-stop-shop’, providing reduced ligature environmental safety products from leading suppliers. ALS ‘models its success’ on offering
expert advice and product knowledge ‘to enable customers to identify the most appropriate products, considering both the environmental and clinical risks presented’. It said: “Last year we enjoyed record growth, which we have reinvested in developing our own products, expanding our sales team, and an exciting new showroom joint venture with Vistamatic. Our stand will showcase an interactive 3600
virtual
tour of our Warrington showroom, enabling visitors to look in detail at many of our unique products on display. “We will also launch several ground-
breaking products, including an exciting new ironmongery upgrade which will upcycle existing mechanical locks to provide previously unattainable functionality.” Other new developments include:
• ALS Safe Support – a new reduced- ligature back support for assisted
WCs;
• Healsafes Interiors – a new coat hook ‘which offers greater ligature
resistance from all directions’;
• The J-trac curtain rail system can now be offered ‘bent to shape’, as well as
with a range of corner adaptors, for increased versatility.
