Welcome. At the start of a new year, it seems appropriate for me to highlight a number of firsts: the first edition of The Network magazine in 2023, and the first time I have the opportunity to welcome Beatrice Fraenkel and Lianne Knotts to the Board within this forum, as well as our new Associates, Vicky Taylor, William Wang, Stephen Parker, and Francis Pitts. I’m especially pleased, as the Network grows, to see geography become history, as Francis and Stephen break down borders on our behalf in the United States. They take the honour of being our first international Associates, and we’re excited to hear about their perspective as we collaborate throughout the year.
Another significant development is,

COVER PICTURE: ‘Heralding a new era in mental health services in Ireland’, the new National Forensic Mental Health Service Hospital in Portrane (see feature, pages 20-23) exploits the therapeutic value of nature ‘in a discreetly secure setting which promotes the recovery of patients’. It is a replacement for the former Central Mental Hospital in Dublin, built in 1850 – one of Europe’s first secure mental health hospitals.

of course, the appointment of Hannah Chamberlain as our first full-time employee and our inaugural CEO. A former service-user with wide-ranging experience in areas including film, media, service-use representation, establishing start-ups, and NHS change management, Hannah is now in post, and has begun her process of understanding the means and methods of the Network’s operations, planning a course to hasten our growth and development in the months and years ahead. You’ll find an-depth interview with Hannah
with The Network’s editor, Jonathan Baillie, inside the magazine (on pages 15-18), in which she discusses her interesting professional background and experience, and looks ahead

Journal of the Design in Mental Health Network A number of notable firsts to celebrate
at some of her aspirations for the DiMHN. A number of very strong candidates were
interviewed for the CEO role, and Hannah was appointed based on the skills and her vision for the Design in Mental Health Network, with her lived experience adding layers of added empathy and understanding that – along with her passionate belief in our work and the impact she can have – made her the compelling candidate. Our conference in June is always an important date in the calendar, and this year it promises to be bigger, broader, and better than ever – our 10th anniversary. There are many ways for you to become involved: presenting, exhibiting, submitting your project/product for awards recognition, networking, and – above all, learning – you can get a flavour of some of the key themes on page 6 of this issue. You’ll also find full details at
DesignInMentalHealth.com, and we look forward to seeing as many new and familiar faces as possible. On behalf of Vice-Chair,
