HIGH SECURE FACILITIES
including for those with reading disabilities or cognitive impairments.
Good ‘visibility’ Transparency in both the overall design and the security strategy were essential in creating a safe and secure environment for patients and staff. For example, using glass walls allows for visual connections between spaces, which promotes a sense of openness and understanding throughout the facility. It will also make it easier for staff to see where patients go, and give patients a sense of security by making them more visible. The staff workstations – as open and accessible hubs in the centre of the wards – exemplify the significance of openness in the security strategy, fostering a safe environment that permits observation – to see and be seen. The glass walls also let more natural light in, which is good for general wellbeing.
Light and circadian rhythms Both natural and artificial light play a significant role in the design. Incorporating natural light is a crucial aspect of our design approach, as it is essential for wellbeing. All through the building, large windows, glass panels, and skylights, are placed in a manner that lets natural light in. Artificial lighting is based on the circadian rhythm. It imitates the natural cycle of the day by simulating the sun rising and

setting, with a bright, cold light in the morning, and a warm, dark glow in the evening, promoting healthy sleep patterns and overall wellbeing. The installation of this lighting required close collaboration with both engineers and manufacturers of the latest control systems and fixture technology.
Appearance, materials, and colours The new high-secure mental health facility has an understated, unobtrusive appearance, with a design intended to make it blend in with its environment. The area’s conservation status and the purpose of the facility do not require any grandiose design. As a result, the building has a
Water Safety Services
DRLC is committed to helping our clients provide facilities and an environment that ensures that healthcare services are delivered in the safest way possible.
We can supply Authorising Engineers – Water Safety to assess that the provision of water across the estate is safe, minimising the risks of exposure to opportunistic waterborne pathogens and controlling risks from scalding.
Fire Safety Services
DRLC has found that Healthcare providers are very motivated to ensure that they mitigate risk and ensure compliance when it comes to Fire Safety standards.
Our Authorising Engineers will do a full audit of your Fire Safety management systems and following their Audit will provide you with a report which includes recommendations for improvements where applicable and support you as you implement any required changes.
Energy Saving Services
With the increase in the price of fuel and the emphasis on carbon reduction our Building Services engineers can advise on a number of low carbon energy solutions.
