BLOOD SCIENCES

Currently, Stago has 14 instruments installed across seven sites, a mix of STA R Max 3 and STA R Max 2 systems, with one STA Compact Max 3 at Mount Vernon

“Instead of establishing just one specialist testing centre at Charing Cross, we set up each of the specialist laboratory services at the most appropriate hospital – and we then challenged the companies providing laboratory solutions to adapt,” Mr Lyall pointed out.

Coagulation testing was at the heart of this change. And Stago UK rose to the challenge, even though NWLP was the largest single installation the company had ever handled when it was first appointed third-party haemostasis supplier in November 2016.

Stago instruments at seven NWLP sites Mike Lyall explained: “NWLP took the approach that the needs of our patients would come first, and Stago had the resources and adaptability to handle any

challenge we threw at them.” The partnership is jointly owned by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It spans seven sites: Charing Cross, St Mary’s, Hammersmith, Chelsea & Westminster, West Middlesex, Hillingdon and Mount Vernon; with developed plans to expand the partnership in the near future. Currently, Stago has 14 instruments installed across the seven sites, a mix of STA R Max 3 and STA R Max 2 systems, with one STA Compact Max 3 at Mount Vernon. All systems have an EPC module which automatically checks sample integrity without slowing throughput. This controls the fill volumes of all types of tube, detecting haemolysed, icteric and lipaemic samples which could affect quality.

Summary of impact of Connect. One on the smooth running of the network for coagulation testing.

• Secure network architecture • Time and cost saving • Easy to use with minimal training needed • Remote support to set up new tests and configure instruments • Full traceability and information trail for remote sessions • Maintenance and problem-solving done remotely • Reduced travel costs so a small carbon footprint • Maximised staff resources to focus on added-value work

Seamless Multi-Discipline Automated Laboratory connectivity North West London Pathology is a pioneer of the Multi-Discipline Automated Laboratory (MDAL). When the MDAL project is completed, pathology services at Charing Cross will be run as a single department, processing tests 24/7 across clinical biochemistry, haematology and haemostasis, viral serology and immunology.

Stago UK instruments already connect seamlessly to the laboratory track even though this is provided by another manufacturer. “Our instruments have been designed to do just that,” said Stago UK marketing manager Gillian Eyre. “While Stago recently introduced its

STA Workcell Max as a dedicated sample process system, the fully automated NHS laboratories like Charing Cross bring in Stago for its technological adaptability. They need our high-throughput coagulation solution to support workflow efficiency by being able to connect across any type of track. So, even if the track supplier were to change, the laboratory knows this won’t affect how their Stago coagulation analysers perform.”

Coagulation testing trends Across all sites, NWLP laboratories already handle 26 million blood tests, with coagulation accounting for approximately 1.2 million tests annually. “This is expected to increase by up to five percent annually for the next few years,” says MDAL haematology manager Matt Kent. “STA R Max systems provide us with the capacity to expand in line with workflow and workload demands – and they offer a reliability that we can depend on when supporting a 24/7 service.” In spite of pressure on workloads, NWLP aims to ‘smash’ its turnaround time (TAT) targets on a regular basis, explained Mr Lyall. While 90% is set as the key performance indicator (KPI) for
