Innovative approach to specialist haematology and coagulation services
North West London Pathology has developed a hub- and-spoke network with clinical need at its forefront across seven hospital sites, supported by Stago UK’s resources and its reputation for adaptability.
North West London Pathology (NWLP) is responsible for one of the largest hub-and-spoke networks within the NHS. But while other networks have taken the conventional path of centralising all routine and specialist testing in one central hub, NWLP has forged a different route, responding to the clinical needs of specific hospitals within the network. The special haematology and coagulation services offered by both
Hammersmith and St Mary’s hospitals enabled NWLP to challenge the conventional blood sciences format. As Mike Lyall, Deputy Divisional Manager Blood Sciences, explained: “The close proximity of these hospitals, together with a dedicated pathology transport network between all NWLP hospital sites allowed us to re-engineer our original model.” St Mary’s Hospital is renowned for its maternity, paediatric haematology
and bone marrow transplantation services. The laboratory already provides a screening service for disorders of haemoglobin production, participates in the NHS Antenatal Screening Programme and offers testing for causes of unexplained haemolysis and red cell enzyme studies. While Charing Cross Hospital would remain the hub for specialist clinical biochemistry, NWLP decided to set up its Special Haematology Laboratory at St Mary’s.
Meeting the coagulation challenge
Special Coagulation was then centralised at Hammersmith Hospital, part of the North London Adult Haemophilia Network. This provided NWLP with the opportunity to rapidly respond to coagulation requests from the haematology clinical teams. Hammersmith already provides an extensive clinical haematology service as well as separately supporting the diagnosis and management of patients with acquired or hereditary thrombotic disorders. Some specialist coagulation assays, such as factors VIII, IX and XI, as well as anti-Xa assays, are available across all NWLP sites 24/7, if urgently required.
Stago UK instruments already connect seamlessly to the laboratory track even though this is provided by another manufacturer.

Across all sites, NWLP laboratories already handle 26 million blood tests, with coagulation accounting for approximately 1.2 million tests annually
