EVENT PREVIEW
service to become accredited using their equipment. For laboratory staff dedicated to quality this day brings an opportunity to consider the standards for your POCT services to help prepare for assessments in this unique environment.
As with previous events, 15Hatfields will host over 30 trade exhibitors in the clinical diagnostics and POC testing areas.
Registration is open now via the www.
POCTInnovators.com website. Food and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
Workshops and panel discussions
Rather than a day-long seminar programme, delegates will be able to participate in two workshops being offered around accreditation to ISO15189:2022 standards. The first will concentrate on starting the journey including transition from the 2012 version, with the second workshop covering more in-depth approaches to maintaining quality and continuous improvement in line with the standards. There will also be a BIVDA-led expert panel which will discuss the current and future needs of diagnostics within the NHS. This will be an interactive session designed to engage attendees in visualising future requirements across multiple medical services. Pathology in Practice will be supporting the event with a special Clinical Diagnostics supplement, featuring material from exhibitors, an event guide and relevant articles covering point-of- care testing and diagnostics. This will be published alongside the September issue of PiP, with copies available at the event. The venue is an excellent space to network with colleagues and meet up with old friends. You are guaranteed to see something new and come away invigorated by the workshops and panel session. Each session is selected at the booking stage so that you can customise the day to meet your needs.
Workshop details
A key component of the day will be the two workshops looking at UKAS accreditation. The sessions have been designed, and will be led by Katy Heaney,
Consultant Clinical Scientist and POCT Specialty Lead for Berkshire and Surrey Pathology services. She will be assisted by a group of experienced clinical and biomedical scientists who will help facilitate the two sessions. Workshop one, while useful for all,
is tailored more to those starting out on their journey to accreditation to ISO 15189:2022. Recognising that it can feel overwhelming to take onboard all of the standards and contemplate what could be big change to your service, the workshop starts off with how to build evidence from the ground up with small changes. Delegates are encouraged to bring examples of their own SOPs and training contents to review. Groups will design templates for verifications and discuss service contingency plans and how we evidence competence in this area. Workshop two, again useful for all, but focused on some finer details and for those further down the line in working toward application. The group will give their reflection on their own recent experience of pre-assessment and assessment, and particularly their unique experience on assessment as a network with multiple trusts. The breakouts will include measurement of uncertainty calculations, patient impact of risks in the service, and service-level agreements. The new standards bring a greater focus on IQC and EQA justification; why they were selected and how they are run. The workshop will go into how the group documented the justification and continue to challenge themselves with this.
While primarily these workshops
are designed for POCT staff working in services, there are benefits to manufacturers understanding what services need from their middleware software, from device reports and from their scientific leads to support a
WWW.PATHOLOGYINPRACTICE.COM AUGUST 2024
POCT Innovators events Thornhill Healthcare Events was established in 2018 to provide accessible and importantly, affordable healthcare events to the NHS and commercial sector. The focus of these events started out as purely POCT and rapid diagnostics but has steadily grown to incorporate a wide range of medical innovations and clinical diagnostic solutions. Accompanying exhibitions featuring trade suppliers help to showcase the amazing work being undertaken by the commercial sector to bring medical solutions to market, but to also give delegates the opportunity to engage with multiple vendors in one day, make new connections and discover solutions they may not have been aware of.
These events have offered delegates an excellent opportunity to share experiences, successes and achievements with colleagues across the NHS and beyond. By sharing knowledge across networks, it is more likely that previous failures or barriers encountered are not replicated by others.
As COVID-19 meant that face to face events could not be held, a number of virtual events were arranged by Thornhill Healthcare Events but it became evident that there was a requirement to share information and knowledge through a different forum. As a result the POCTInnovators website was created in 2021 as a free to access educational resource focusing on medical devices, rapid diagnostics and point of care. The website hosts articles and opinion pieces from the wider POC community, sharing best practice across global territories. The website is supported by the commercial sector including a number of vendor pages which showcase the latest technology, device and test performance characteristics, case studies, educational materials, publications and more.
POCT Innovators
POCT Innovators was conceived as a resource for healthcare professionals, diagnostics companies and key opinion leaders to share information related to the field of point of care, rapid and decentralised diagnostics.
