The history of 3M™

Ioban™ From the beginning

After World War II, three physicians approached 3M with the idea to create a surgical drape using a plastic sheet that could stick to skin. The only solution for creating a barrier for incisions at the time was to sterilise cloth and attach it with pincers to the patients’ skin.

Antimicrobial Incise Drapes

Trusted for over 40 years By 1980 the new product – 3M™

Ioban™ Ioban™ Antimicrobial

Incise Drape, was ready for launch. That initial version was updated over time to 3M™

2 Antimicrobial Incise

Drape – the same market leading product trusted by surgeons today.

Ioban 2 Antimicrobial Incise Drapes have been used in millions of procedures worldwide for over 40 years. Ioban 2 Antimicrobial Incise Drape is supported by evidence that met or exceeded the hypotheses across multiple endpoints, including microbiological impacts that were associated with infection risk reduction outcomes as well as economic success when used as part of a comprehensive perioperative solution.2,3,4,5

A recent study demonstrated

that the use of Ioban can deliver overall cost savings of €957 per patient (approx. £650 per patient).2

The physicians wanted to collaborate with 3M scientists to create a gentle adhesive that would stick to skin. This partnership kicked off the first 3M medical solution. The new surgical drape was introduced to the American College of Surgeons in Cleveland, Ohio in 1948, the same year as the birth of the NHS. 1

While the new 3M surgical drapes (currently available as 3M™

Steri-Drape™ products) were a great improvement over

sterilised towels, more infection protection was required for more invasive procedures like joint replacements, cardiothoracic surgery, and other procedures involving implants, neurosurgery, and trauma events.

The 3M team continued to discuss the problem with surgeons and operating room nurses, and eventually came up with an idea. Is it possible to modify the Steri-Drape design to include an antimicrobial component in the adhesive itself? The wound or intended incision could then be covered directly by such a drape.

From this an adhesive was developed that not only adhered well to skin but was also compatible with the iodine formulation used as the antimicrobial agent.

More than just an adhesive drape, Ioban 2 Antimicrobial Incise Drape helps guard against SSIs by creating an optimised wound incision environment through continuous antimicrobial activity, immobilising bacteria and conformable adhesion that helps the drape stay in place throughout the surgical procedure.

From the relatively simple solutions of the 1940s, the science of infection prevention and the understanding of its role in preventing hospital-associated infections have advanced significantly. By continuing to pursue customer-inspired innovations like Ioban 2 Antimicrobial Incise Drapes, at Solventum, we enable better, smarter, safer healthcare to improve lives.
