Circle Health Group to deploy the VELYS robotic-assisted solution, nationally

Circle Health Group, the UK’s largest independent hospital operator, plans to deploy ten of Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution for knee replacement across the UK. The major deal will see the latest orthopaedic robotic assisted-solution available at Circle’s hospitals in Glasgow, Manchester, Reading, Basingstoke and Great Missenden for the first time. The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution works

exclusively with the ATTUNE Knee System, which has been shown to improve patient-reported outcomes by working in harmony with the patient’s anatomy to delivery significant improvements in post-operative stability and motion. The system crucially focuses on assisting surgeons to protect and preserve the soft tissue envelope around the knee joint. Promising greater precision, combined with CT-free technology, the VELYS robot delivers optimised implant placement and predictable results that show patients recover from surgery with increased mobility and shorter stays in hospital. Working with Johnson and Johnson MedTech,

Circle is now able to offer patients access to one of the largest collections of robotic surgical systems under one roof in the UK. The arrival of the ten VELYS systems is the latest milestone in Circle’s

drive to deploy leading technology at scale across its UK wide hospital network. With a VELYS system already established at the group’s The Park Hospital in Nottingham, Circle then launched the system at its hospitals in Glasgow, Manchester, Reading, Basingstoke and Great Missenden at the end of May 2025.

Commenting on the launch, Peter James, Group Medical Director at Circle Health Group, said: “We are delighted to be working with Johnson & Johnson Med Tech to deploy the VELYS system at scale across the UK. As an orthopaedic surgeon myself, I know first-hand that patients are looking for faster recovery times and an improved quality of life post- surgery. The arrival of these systems promises to offer our patients the latest and best technology at a time and location convenient to them.” Gavin Meadows, General Manager, Johnson & Johnson MedTech, Orthopaedics, UK & Ireland, said: “Patient Outcomes is the leading way of measuring success and the latest data suggests the ATTUNE Knee System with the VELYS Robotic Assisted Solution, currently leads the way. We’re incredibly proud to be equipping Circle Health Group with the best in medical technology so they can help their patients get back to life, faster.”

New guide on antibiotic prophylaxis

A new GIRFT guide on antibiotic prophylaxis in arthroplasty describes the key principles surgical teams should have in place to help prevent surgical site and periprosthetic joint infection during joint replacement surgery. It aims to reduce variation in antibiotic prescribing practice across NHS Trusts. It will also form part of the assessment of surgical hubs going through the GIRFT hub accreditation process. This guidance serves as a practical tool to embedding appropriate surgical antibiotic prophylaxis for all primary arthroplasty procedures, including hips, knees, shoulders, elbows and ankles. It is supplementary to and consistent with the guidance provided in the Ambulatory Hip and Knee Replacement Guide from the GIRFT programme, as well as the pathways for primary total hip replacement and primary knee replacement The guide advises that all NHS Trusts should

have an agreed protocol for surgical antibiotic prophylaxis, and provides information on which antibiotic to give, when to give it and how long for, recognising the opportunities for standardisation across the dosing regimen to optimise infection prevention, reduce adverse events associated with surgical antibiotic prophylaxis, and ensure the judicious use of antimicrobials.
