Reducing surgical site infections with optimised airflow


Hospital patients regularly suffer from infections due to surgery, and clinical teams are continuously looking for ways to help reduce the number of surgical site infections each year.

Ultra-clean ventilation (UCV) plays a vital role in theatres, delivering a change of air and improved air flow to the patient area. This ultra clean airflow should be prevented from obstruction and Merivaara Q-Flow™ lighting, distributed by Bender, is specifically designed to work effectively with UCV canopies.


Standard DIN:1946 recommends that turbulence intensity should be less than 37.5%, and the Q-Flow™ operating light with its innovative ring shape design, far exceeds this recommended with a measure of 15.91%.


Q-Flow™ lighting allows air to pass from the canopy through the light to the patient, and outwards to exit the sterile zone. Any contamination generated by the surgical team is extracted away from the operation site.


Q-Flow™ surgical lights are tested to deliver best-in-class turbulence and illumination performance. The innovative design reduces the creation of a harmful vacuum and enhances the performance of the UCV in its primary role of taking contaminants away from site of the operation, making a vital contribution to improving patient safety and helping to reduce surgical site infections.
