Discussion
Novices and advanced beginners normally experience a tedious first plateau along the learning curve when little skill is acquired over time, mostly in a simulation setting and under pro-active supervision in a clinical setting. Both settings are time and resource consuming, which could become scarce during and post-crisis, when service delivery will be prioritised over training. Prolonging this first plateau could be a source of frustration, undermining the focus on learning. Competent trainees are on the ascending or steep part of their learning curve, under reactive supervision.10
The steeper the
graph, the easier the learning over a shorter period of time. An interruption on this path to competency will result in a softer learning curve, meaning learning with difficulty over a longer period of time; hence, shifting right the learning curve.
