Diagnostics focus at Virtual MEDICA

MEDICA 2020 and COMPAMED 2020 will take place entirely online from 16 to 19 November. High on the agenda will be infection diagnostics and a focus on the central role of laboratory medicine in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to the coronavirus, the world’s large trade fair will now take place online. Naturally, infection diagnostics and testing will be high on the agenda, with English speaking conferences offering insights into the latest scientific findings. Within the framework of ‘virtual.MEDICA’

and ‘virtual.COMPAMED’, decision-makers from all sectors of the healthcare industry can expect a comprehensive range of products and services at virtual.MEDICA.de and virtual. COMPAMED.de consisting of three focal areas: the Conference Area (conference and forum programme), the Exhibition Space (for exhibitors and product innovations) and the Networking Plaza (networking/ matchmaking). Horst Giesen, global portfolio director for Health & Medical Technologies at Messe Düsseldorf, commented: “We will stream the best elements from the 600 previously planned sessions for the specialist forums and conferences. Participants can expect to see highlights with high relevance

technologies The MEDICA Health IT Forum will showcase and discuss the latest developments in the field of digital health solutions. Sessions for this forum will focus on four main topics. On the opening day, under the heading of ‘Digital therapeutics’, mobile and web-based healthcare will be high on the agenda. to Corona, in particular, in these virtual formats. In addition, there will be diverse web presentations from exhibitors on their innovations and an online matchmaking area for making valuable business contacts, including a video web meeting function.” This year, the Labmed forum will consider how diagnoses can be given even faster and more securely. The forum will offer a high-profile programme with top speakers, free of charge for registered online visitors. Sessions in the forum focus on the topics of microbiology, infectious diseases, cardiology, oncology and COVID-19.

Day 1: Microbiome diagnostics, infection diagnostics and breathomics

The series of events opens on 16 November (from 12:00 p.m.) with the microbiome/ infection diagnostics and breathomics themes, chaired by Prof. Beniam Ghebremedhin (Witten/Herdecke University, Helios Wuppertal University Clinic). Following an introduction to the topic, with explanations of the analytical standards by Prof. Andrè Gessner, Prof. Ernst Holler will clarify how this research is used in oncology. Both of the doctors come from the University Hospital Regensburg. The next two talks examine the significance of microbiotics for the central corporeal communication axis, the gut-brain axis, and for gastroenterology. The speakers include Prof. Jonathan Swann, Imperial College, London and Prof. Simona Cristescu, Institute for Molecules and Materials, Nijmegen. The next part of the programme focuses on ‘breathomics’. Breathomics, from a microbiological point of view, provide information on respiratory tract infections and potential bacterial colonisation of the gut. Prof. Agnieszka Smolinska, Maastricht

University, offers an insight into the use of this analytic technique in gastroenterology. Dr. Wolfgang Vautz, ION-Gas GmbH, also presents a new procedure for respiratory analysis in his presentation, while Prof. Jonathan Swan and Prof. Dr. Wieland Vogt, from the Steinbeis University of Berlin, explore the role of volatile metabolites within the context of the gut-brain axis and applications for monitoring influenza.

Day 2: Digitalisation, computational biology and genetics in cardiology and oncology The second day of the virtual event, 17 November (from 12 p.m.) is chaired by Prof. Stefan Holdenrieder of the German Heart Centre Munich. This will include a focus on digital cardiology. The paperless hospital campaign aims to record all information from the patient’s treatment and diagnosis, digitally, with a view to improving outcomes. Dr. Moritz von Scheidt, of the German Heart Centre Munich, discusses the organisation of data streams and innovative networks for personalised healthcare, particularly for coronary heart disease, in his lecture. From devices designed to measure blood pressure and heart rate, to technologies for measuring stress levels, more and more digital devices are supplying the health-
