engineering excellence alongside clinical insight - an enduring combination that has shaped the identity of Wassenburg Medical. It was during the early 2000s that Wassenburg

products entered the UK healthcare market in a meaningful way. At that time, endoscope reprocessing in many UK hospitals was still largely manual, with automated systems used only in a small number of specialist centres. Although the first HTM 2030 guidelines had been published in the late 1990s, compliance was inconsistent and many facilities were still adapting to the requirements. As concerns around patient safety grew - heightened by several significant incidents and increased regulatory scrutiny - the NHS undertook a fundamental reassessment of its decontamination practices. In this context, the Wassenburg system, with its controlled, automated and channel-specific reprocessing, aligned closely with the expectations set out in the emerging guidance and offered a timely, robust solution for hospitals seeking safer and more standardised practices.

Driving innovation Against this backdrop, Wassenburg introduced the WD440 top-loader system to the UK. This system provided a new level of assurance, incorporating validated cleaning and disinfection cycles, automated process control and enhanced traceability. The subsequent introduction of the WD440 Pass-Through (PT) model further strengthened Wassenburg’s position in the UK market. Designed to support best-practice room layouts, the PT model enabled the physical separation of dirty and clean workflows - helping departments meet infection control requirements more effectively. These systems were rapidly adopted across NHS hospitals and soon became recognised for their safety, reliability and ease of use. Today, Wassenburg washer-disinfectors, drying cabinets and storage systems are used daily across a wide range of NHS hospitals and leading private healthcare facilities. They support thousands of patient procedures each week, quietly underpinning diagnostic and therapeutic services. Although reprocessing often takes place behind the scenes, its impact on patient safety, clinical efficiency and service continuity is profound. Wassenburg has also played an important

role in the UK Government’s Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) programme. As part of this initiative to expand diagnostic capacity and bring services closer to local communities, the company has helped ensure that high-quality endoscope reprocessing provision is built into these environments from the outset.

Wassenburg’s new facility, under construction in Elst, Netherlands Innovation at Wassenburg now extends

beyond fixed installations. In recognition of the operational pressures faced by healthcare providers, the company has developed more flexible and resilient reprocessing solutions. A recent partnership with EMS, a leading supplier of mobile decontamination facilities, exemplifies this approach. Through this collaboration, Wassenburg now offers a mobile endoscope decontamination solution designed to ensure business continuity during refurbishment projects, capacity upgrades or emergency scenarios such as catastrophic equipment failure. These mobile units can be deployed rapidly, allowing endoscopy services to continue with minimal disruption while maintaining full compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Sustainability Sustainability and environmental responsibility have also become central themes within Wassenburg’s design philosophy. Decontamination processes are resource- intensive, and water consumption, energy use and chemical waste are key areas of concern for hospitals seeking to reduce their environmental footprint. In response, Wassenburg has embedded continuous improvements to water efficiency within its development roadmap. Modern AER systems now use significantly less water per cycle than previous generations, without compromising cleaning or disinfection performance - a reflection of the company’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability. Beyond environmental performance,

Wassenburg’s sustainability agenda also includes product longevity and lifecycle support. By designing equipment that is robust, upgradable and supported over many years, the company aims to reduce waste and maximise value for healthcare providers. As healthcare systems continue to evolve,

for improved documentation and compliance with regulatory requirements. Under the leadership of Ronald and Arno

Wassenburg, Gerrit’s sons, the company’s innovation strategy continues to be guided by the same family values and integrity that defined its founder’s vision. Ethical business practice, high-quality engineering and close collaboration with decontamination professionals remain core to Wassenburg’s success. Now in its 42nd year, Wassenburg Medical

remains focused on its mission to provide every patient with a safe endoscope. As a dedicated specialist in endoscope reprocessing, the company’s legacy is reflected not only in its technology but also in its long-standing support for the decontamination community through education, training and knowledge-sharing. Looking ahead, the Wassenburg journey is

far from over. Further developments across the portfolio are already on the horizon, promising new advances that will continue to shape the future of endoscope reprocessing. From Gerrit’s first concept sketch to the global organisation it is today, Wassenburg Medical has remained true to its founding promise of delivering “a safe endoscope for every patient”. More than four decades on, that principle continues to guide the company’s actions, decisions and aspirations. In remembering Gerrit Wassenburg, we honour not only a pioneering engineer but a man whose vision transformed an essential yet often overlooked aspect of healthcare. His legacy lives on in every automated cycle, every validated process and every patient protected by safer endoscope reprocessing.

Wassenburg remains firmly committed to research and development. The company is investing in technologies that enhance efficiency, optimise traceability and further strengthen patient protection. Digital integration, data capture and connectivity are increasingly central to this effort, reflecting hospitals’ needs
