Conclusion If surgical instruments are not designed to fit the needs of all members of the surgical community, there is a danger that the continued drive to attract and retain more female surgeons will be undermined. When other professions such as musicians and athletes have recognised the need to cater for all shapes and sizes for some time, it is surprising that such a significant proportion of surgeons are still reporting injuries relating to the use of surgical instruments. Surgical instruments that are not designed for a diverse workforce could impact the health and well-being of individual surgeons, which could potentially impact outcomes for patients. B. Braun’s new generation of design aims to ensure surgical instrumentation works for everyone.
