Arab Health review
Arab Health success for UK HealthTech
Arab Health 2023 – the second largest healthcare event in the world – saw the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) return with a delegation featuring 150 of the UK’s most innovative health technology companies. CSJ spoke to ABHI’s head of international events, Michelle Michelucci, about this year’s action-packed programme and why the show continues to provide such an influential platform for showcasing the best of what the UK has to offer on the global stage.
The healthcare sector in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, particularly in the UAE, has experienced tremendous growth over the past decade – and remains one of the region’s fastest-growing industries. According to the latest projections, healthcare spending when it comes to the UAE will reach $2.5 billion in 2025 and $3.6 billion by 2030.1
is being driven by an increasing prevalence of lifestyles diseases, an ageing population, along with the nation’s ambition to become a regional medical tourism hub. The creation of a world-class healthcare infrastructure also remains a clear priority for the Government of the UAE and increases in healthcare spending from both private and governmental sources have acted as key drivers of growth within the region’s healthcare market. Against this rapidly expanding landscape, there are many opportunities for UK collaboration in fast- growing areas like HealthTech and the broader life sciences. conference and exhibition held annually in Dubai, continues to offer a dynamic platform for ideas, innovation, partnerships and collaboration. Bringing the global healthcare community together to discover the way forward through sustainable and innovative solutions that can tackle our most important challenges and revolutionise healthcare for future generations. Organised by the Association of British
HealthTech Industries (ABHI) and Department for International Trade (DIT), the UK Pavilion stand ran an extensive programme, demonstrating the importance of UK and UAE relationships at the four-day exhibition – widely renowned as the largest of its kind in the Middle East, and second only to MEDICA as the world’s largest. Michelle Michelucci, ABHI’s Head of
International Events, comments: “Via Arab Health, we have been coming to the Middle East for the past two decades, bringing with us some of the UK’s finest HealthTech innovators. HealthTech is a rapidly growing industry, and through enhanced trade links between the
UK and the GCC, more patients can benefit from life-enhancing, and often life-saving, technologies. The UK brand is incredibly well respected in the Middle East, and Arab Health represents a prime opportunity for UK innovators to connect with procurement professionals from across the region to support and enhance patient care.” The show this year – now in its 48th year –
featured over 2,000 companies showcasing their latest innovations to over 50,000 healthcare and trade professionals from a total of 159 countries. In total there were 39 country pavilions, including the United Kingdom. For the past 20 years, the largest UK Pavilion has been organised by the ABHI – the leading industry association for the health technology sector in the UK. This year saw ABHI join forces with the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) to present a week-long programme of live surgical demonstrations and thought leadership presentations. With an impressive delegation comprising 150 of the industry’s most forward- thinking companies, the 2023 show saw ABHI deliver its most impressive stand to date – nearly doubling the amount of space taken at the 2022 show, with an inspiring programme of activity delivered across all four days. Michelle adds: “This year, the ABHI UK Pavilion welcomed 150 organisations, encompassing HealthTech businesses, clinics, hospitals, the AHSN Network and the devolved administrations of Wales and Northern Ireland. Branding, stand facilities and activity were all delivered in partnership with the Department for International Trade. “Through our large central support stand,
we coordinated a busy programme of thought leadership presentations, and alongside that, our simulated operating theatre provided live demos of surgical procedures – a particular highlight being a hip replacement procedure
