CSC Annual Scientific Meeting A recent report by the HSIB warned that

there is “no national picture of the scale of the problem of dirty instruments arriving in operating theatres for use on patients”. It called for the reporting of such incidents, better training and competency assessment, changes to governance, and improvements to the design of surgical instruments. The investigation followed an incident in which ‘black material’ was seen coming out of the end of a surgical

instrument. This was later confirmed to be dried blood and, as a result, the patient had to be tested for bloodborne viruses. Patient safety is a top priority for decontamination teams but eliminating human error can be challenging. With this in mind, Elaine Cloutman-Green, consultant clinical scientist in infection prevention and control/ lead healthcare scientist at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, will provide an

insight into: ‘Human factors and how people bring uncertainty to any system’. At the end of the first day, there will be a drinks reception, followed by the ASM Gala dinner and quiz. This promises to be a fun opportunity for the sector to network with colleagues from across the decontamination sector, in a relaxed and informal setting. On the second day, Karen Johnson, operational director, University Hospital Birmingham, will chair the session on ‘Mobile Decontamination Units’, with John Prendergast, senior decontamination engineer, NHS Wales, which will consider the question: ‘Mobile treatment units – essential quality requirements or best practice?’ The theme will be explored further in the field of endoscopy, with a presentation by Helen Griffiths, associate director of Primary Care Networks, NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire CCG, who will provide an insight onto ‘Clinical perspectives on mobile endoscopy units’. The programme will conclude with a focus on decontamination in the dental sector. This section of the programme will revisit the hot topics in dental decontamination, as we hear from across the four nations. Speakers will include Andrew Smith, professor of clinical bacteriology & Hon consultant microbiologist, University of Glasgow; David Coleman, professor of oral & applied microbiology, dental science, Trinity College, Dublin; Alice Miller, assistant associate postgraduate dean, NHS Education for Scotland; IIona Johnson, consultant in public health for Public Health Wales; and Ian Mills, associate professor in primary care dentistry, Plymouth. They will discuss the challenges of balancing IPC and instrument decontamination, and the pressures faced on the front line today. Dr. Jimmy Walker, chair of the CSC, said

“Following on from our recent Green Endoscopy and Sustainability Day* in October 2022, we are delighted to be visiting the great city of Newcastle upon Tyne for our Annual Scientific Meeting on 3-4 April. We have a fantastic range of topics and speakers lined up. This will be one of the decontamination highlights of the year and those that work in the area of decontamination will not want to miss such a great event. We look forward to seeing all out delegates for this packed out programme including the CSC AGM and the annual quiz after the gala dinner.” The event carries 14 CPD points for the two days.
