comments: “The pace at which MMC builds go up enables us to make significant strides in increasing the hospital’s footprint to meet the ever-growing needs of the communities we care for.” Additional theatres and an integrated ward are also being built at the Royal Bolton Hospital using MMC. New funding will add two more theatres, as well as the creation of a bespoke day-case paediatrics theatre hub, by refurbishing Royal Bolton Hospital’s existing day case theatres. The state-of-the-art theatres will help to improve outcomes and experiences for patients, from both Bolton and Greater Manchester, while reducing the number of patients waiting for surgery. In addition to these projects, three new orthopaedic operating theatres are being built at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, along with a three-storey Royal Eye Infirmary project, at the Derriford Hospital site for University Hospitals Plymouth.
Critical care facilities As well as new surgical hubs, MTX has delivered a 48-bed critical care building for the prestigious John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, utilising MMC. The company provided Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with a 5,450m² new critical care building in exceptional timing. The new five storey facility, now called Oxford Critical Care (OCC), was part of a regional approach for managing critical care demand and activity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to supporting and alleviating future seasonal and epidemic pressures for the Trust. Situated directly next to the hospital’s existing
trauma department, the OCC connects directly into one of the main live corridors at ground floor level – enabling a seamless flow between departments housing theatres, imaging, and diagnostics facilities. This allows for a fast, efficient route for patients who may require subsequent further critical care. Through off-site construction, MTX was also able to minimise disruption to the trauma department and allow for uninterrupted staff and patient access. The new OCC comprises three 16-bed wards
across the ground floor, first floor and second floor, a dedicated plant room and non-clinical accommodation – such as seminar rooms, offices, and spacious staff rooms across the remaining two floors. The top floor dedicated staff area boasts enviable 360-degree views of the Oxfordshire countryside, providing staff with a beautiful and calming environment to take training seminars. Over five days, 148 modules were safely and
efficiently craned into place by the experienced on-site team. Through continuous and close communication with the client, the team were able to work meticulously to ensure successful
new build to the old site, allowing the relocation of ambulatory care services into the existing footprint. This, in effect, achieves the development of an Urgent Care Village which will support more cohesive working and improve patient experience and reduce assessment times. Overall, MMC provided Leighton Hospital with 4,200m² of new emergency care accommodation and successfully achieved a BREEAM score of ‘Very Good’.
delivery in the shortest possible programme, while still maintaining the highest standards. “The construction took just 18 months, which is
unheard of for a building of this size. If this was a traditional build, you would be looking at double this period,” David explains. “It is important to note that MMC brings with it a ‘can-do’ attitude. The whole team is motivated and incentivised to move quickly, so there are no delays at the pre-construction phase, which can often hold up conventional builds.”
Emergency departments Trusts are also employing the use of MMC to expand capacity for emergency departments. Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, for example, had a requirement to expand its A&E capabilities to cater for a larger patient intake across the Crewe area. MTX provided a larger, safer and superior
environment for patients and staff, at the Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust location. The result was an aesthetically pleasing, fit-for-purpose modern facility. Over two storeys of accommodation, MTX increased the number of treatment rooms, rapid assessment rooms, isolation bays, resus bays and mental health assessment rooms, in addition to providing a new bereavement suite, CT and X-Ray capabilities and a dedicated paediatrics unit. The project also yields efficiencies and delivers greater clinical effectiveness through the co-location of the
A collaborative approach The key to success is a collaborative approach, according to David: “We are constantly evolving and applying the lessons learnt from each installation to the next project, working with our supply chain and design consultants to constantly innovate.”
He points out that it is important that
clinicians are involved very early on in the design phase – the company works closely with clinical teams to identify their requirements. This means that the feedback from clinical staff, once they start to use the new, state-of-the-art facilities, is extremely positive. “Ultimately, the Government has outlined a
clear directive that there should be increased adoption of MMC. NHS Trusts and clinicians are being urged to embrace this – there are so many advantages to MMC,” David concludes.
