Prostate cancer screening trial could save thousands of lives


Thousands of men’s lives could be saved, as a major new prostate cancer screening trial is set to get under way in the UK, backed by £42 million from the government and Prostate Cancer UK. The first-of-its-kind trial, called TRANSFORM, will use innovative screening methods such as MRI scans to detect prostate cancer, and will include hundreds of thousands of men across the country. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK and has no screening programme. It usually has no symptoms until it has grown large and may be more difficult to treat, and around 12,000 men die each year as a result. Screening for prostate cancer could identify these men earlier, before their cancer spreads. The trial has the potential to see new screening methods give more accurate results than the current blood tests, which can miss some cancers and often suggest prostate cancer when no cancer exists. Crucially, screening could also spot the disease even when no symptoms are displayed. Laura Kerby, Chief Executive at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “12,000 men die of prostate cancer each year and it’s the most common cancer that doesn’t have a national screening programme. Drones enable use of defibrillators


Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have evaluated the possibility of alerting drones equipped with automated external defibrillators (AED) to patients with suspected cardiac arrest. In more than half of the cases, the drones were ahead of the ambulance by an average of three minutes. In cases where the patient was in cardiac

Screening hub set up with Everton


LumiraDx, a point of care diagnostics company, has announced a strategic collaboration with Everton in the Community to set up England’s first community-based heart and lung screening hub. The official charity of Everton Football Club will run this novel screening hub from the recently opened People’s Place. The hub will provide the Merseyside community with access to the latest technologies and specialist input from a multidisciplinary team of primary care, heart, and lung specialists to focus on early diagnosis and early treatment for chronic breathlessness in a walk-in setting. This is according to a study of 278,000 individuals in Sweden ages 6 to 64 who had an incident ADHD diagnosis or ADHD medication dispensation. These findings highlight the importance


of carefully weighing potential benefits and risks when making treatment decisions about long-term ADHD medication use. Clinicians should regularly and consistently monitor cardiovascular signs and symptoms throughout the course of treatment.
