Presentation title: Beyond Disposal: Building a Circular Economy for Medical Devices The Circular Economy (CE) CE is a term applied over the last decade to a system in which material resources are retained to perform useful functions, rather than being lost in landfill or converted to energy. The CE approach reduces environmental impacts from extraction and transport of virgin materials, benefiting end-users, society, and the productivity of economies. The proliferation of the range and number of medical
treatments, their inherent reliance on the use of medical devices as well as an aging population and rapid growth in the number of patients seeking the most advanced treatments globally has resulted in a significant escalation
of waste medical devices. CE thinking has hardly penetrated the medical device field. This presentation provides an overview of the space for innovation and impact which can be explored through a transdisciplinary approach by bring together design, science & engineering, operational management and behavioural science to support the transition towards a CE in the UK healthcare sector.
Chris Bush Zimmer Biomet I have worked for Zimmer Biomet for twenty-seven years as a Sales Representative responsible for the sales and support of Zimmer Biomet hip and knee prostheses in Operating Theatres around the Midlands area. Part of my job is to ensure that Zimmer Biomet’s instrument sets are in working order and to assist surgeons and staff in their use.
