INSTITUTE NEWS

One of the major areas of focus for Marketing & Events Manager, Melissa Glass, has been working on the development of IHEEM’s new website, in collaboration with an external IT company; she promises that the new website, which will include the aforementioned online CPD recording capacity, alongside a number of other significant improvements, and a brighter and more accessible design, will be ‘a vast improvement over what we have now’. It is due for launch in August.

AE and CEng interviews still taking place

On the membership front, Membership Development Officer, Karen Casey, is still able to process new membership applications, Engineering Council registrations, and Authorising Engineer applications. During the ‘lockdown’, IHEEM has held successful AE(W) and CEng interviews, which, thanks to volunteer interviewers, were able to be conducted using Teams videoconferencing. The Institute adds: “It is important that we continue to work to our Business Plan, and this area of work addresses our first core objective, ‘To consistently grow and develop membership’. We have also been working hard to keep in touch with our members, but our goal is to not to burden them, or remove them from their key work in the healthcare sector.

To keep them informed, we have been releasing bi-weekly newsletters to keep them up to date with new regulations and guidance that will assist them in responding to the challenges posed by the current pandemic. (To view the published newsletters, visit iheem.org.uk). Publishing the newsletter has also provided an interesting way to collaborate and work closely with our stakeholders, government, and international connections. Our core objective 6, ‘Raise the Profile of IHEEM nationally and internationally, and become more professional in approach and accountability to Members and the Engineering Council UK’, links directly to this line of work.”

Young person membership and STEM work

Administration Coordinator, Clair Wilkins, has been fulfilling vital administrative responsibilities for IFHE, and helping with data management, working alongside Tania Davies, using the new Head Office IT infrastructure, while Project Support Officer, Monira Kaouech, has been further developing the Institute’s young person membership programme, alongside the successful STEM work she has been undertaking throughout the year (see HEJ –May 2020), and making this come to life on the IHEEM website. She has also led on managing

the roles and responsibilities on the new IT system, to ensure effective governance and compliance.

Finally, Event & Marketing Support Officer, Gemma Boulton, has spent considerable time in recent weeks working to put together the first IHEEM Annual Report, a publication which, it is hoped, may be published every year in future if the first ‘issue’ proves popular. She explains that among the varied content will be a timeline of key IHEEM activity in the year from October 2019 to October 2020, with a particular focus on IHEEM’s proactive work during the coronavirus outbreak, ‘snapshots’ of both the 2020 Financial Accounts and the Institute’s Business and Investment Plans, a look at the increasing and developing CPD support provided to members, and a look ahead to new ways of working and activity planned for the various Technical Platforms.

Healthcare Estates ‘deferred’ for a year

IHEEM, in conjunction with Step Exhibitions, have taken the decision to defer the 2020 Healthcare Estates Conference, Exhibition and Gala Awards Dinner due to have been held at Manchester Central this year from 6-7 October to October 2021. The Institute said in a statement: “The IHEEM Head Office team has been closely reviewing the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and, following detailed discussions with Step Exhibitions, we have jointly concluded that it would not be practical or safe to hold the planned 2020 Healthcare Estates event this year.

“The success of the two-day event is built on bringing together world-class

speakers and exhibitors on all aspects of estates management, along with providing an environment that is safe and comfortable and provides people with the opportunity to network and learn from each other. Last year – as testament to this – the conference hosted the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering European Congress, which saw 60 different countries attend our ever-growing event. Those who are familiar with the event know how busy it can be, while remaining relaxed and informal. We are all extremely proud of what has been created to provide the healthcare sector with great opportunities to network throughout the two days. “We have worked hard over many

years to make Healthcare Estates the event it is today. However, we recognise that we have a duty to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff, delegates, speakers, and exhibitors, alongside our wider social responsibilities to support the fight against COVID-19. A Step Exhibitions representative will be in touch with exhibitors to go through their options. In the meantime, we are looking forward to establishing a free online platform of events to provide valued CPD content to all. More details will follow once the feasibility of this has been established. We thank you all for your cooperation and understanding throughout these unprecedented times.”
