WATER HYGIENE & SAFETY

Room decontamination with pH-neutral Conti+ oXan disinfection solution and fogger.

should take to reduce the risk from waterborne infections such as Legionella. It is recommended that the water installation be shut off at the main shut- off device, temporarily closing down the supply. Guidance such as that set out in the relevant sections of HTM 04-01, Safe water in healthcare premises, parts A, B, and C, and the Health & Safety Executive’s L8 Approved Code of Practice and guidance, Legionnaires’ disease. The control of Legionella bacteria in water systems, should be followed for the necessary re-starting of the water supply.

Depending on how long the building has been empty, and the number of users anticipated, the corresponding rinsing and system disinfection measures also need to be taken before the water system is returned to use, in line with the recommendations and guidance in HTM 04-01 part B. Quantitative rapid testing should be undertaken at a number of locations to identify any possible contamination. It is also important to keep testing the system on a regular basis, especially initially. We would advise users to check the quality and safety of their drinking / domestic hot and cold water quickly and easily using a drinking water hygiene test such as the one available from Conti+, in order to determine the microbiological quality of the water. This can be part of the ongoing maintenance and measurement/testing of the water system.

Stubborn colonisation For stubborn colonisation within a hospital water system which cannot be eradicated via thermal disinfection, we recommend considering use of a disinfection solution. Conti+ oXan can be administered across the entire water system using a targeted dosing system to eradicate the contamination. The pH- neutral, non-toxic properties of the Conti+ disinfection solution allow for the safe use of the building while decontamination takes place.

Decontamination in an acute situation using Conti+ oXan Where buildings or rooms need to be brought back into use following contamination by viruses, bacteria, germs, or spores, estates managers have a number of options at their disposal. The following process should be used when utilising the Conti+ oXan disinfection solution: n Remove all movable, sensitive, and potentially contaminated materials and objects, especially those with non- smooth surfaces, into another room, and disinfect them separately. Conti+ oXan can be sprayed onto the item and left to dry, reducing the risk of cross- contamination from cloths.

n Any air-conditioning systems should be cold fogged.

n Electrical devices sensitive to damp mist should be covered prior to fogging.

n Orientative studies of surfaces and contact surfaces of all kinds should be carried out via quantitative rapid tests (contact) to measure the possible contamination.

n The room can be fogged using Conti+ oXan.

Appropriate hand hygiene by should be observed before, during, and after the disinfection process.

Maintaining good hygiene practice Whether buildings are in current use, or they are being recommissioned, key actions as part of ongoing maintenance should include: n Testing – Make sure that regular testing of the domestic hot and cold water supply is carried out.

n Going ‘touch-free’ – Consider all opportunities for using sensor- controlled products.

n Schedule in regular maintenance on taps and showers, such as hygienic flushing, whether via a manual process or an automated water management system.

n Scheduling in checks for hand sanitiser dispensers. Wherever possible, consider a touch-free option for dispensing the hand sanitiser, to avoid cross- contamination.

n Maintain effective surface cleaning, consider pH-neutral options for maintaining the quality of the water leaving the building, and avoid cleaning processes that risk contamination through dirty cloths.

As all of us adjust to the new normal, we are all looking at ways to automate and simplify in order to be more effective and efficient. As an expert in hygiene solutions, Conti+ works closely with organisations in healthcare, education, leisure, and public buildings, with a focus on helping clients to prevent infection, and maintain and manage hygiene for their buildings, and, critically, the users of them.
