The IHEEM Head Office team has been working from home for over two months now – in line with the Government's guidelines on working practices and social distancing – and while some of the Institute-organised events have had to be deferred, the headquarters team has been extremely busy supporting the membership and the wider healthcare estates and facilities community. All regular face-to-face meetings have been changed to remote meetings by video or teleconference. Monira Kaouech, Project Support Officer, elaborates: “For example, we have been able to continue normal business in our Council and Management and Finance Committee meetings.”
Sharing international experience CEO, Pete Sellars, has spent considerable time liaising with the Institute’s international colleagues, particularly via the IFHE-EU group and the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering worldwide. One of the key initiatives here has been the establishment and publication online on the IHEEM website of a bi-monthly newsletter highlighting ‘global knowledge, experiences, and lessons learned in relation to COVID-19 by learned members and colleagues of IHEEM/IFHE and IFHE EU’. The IHEEM CEO has also been leading on COVID-19 communications for the Institute, and liaising regularly on the subject with both NHS E&I in England, and the World Health Organization. With the Institute having received a number of calls and emails from companies and individuals asking IHEEM how they might offer their services, skills, and knowledge to the NHS as the coronavirus outbreak took hold UK-wide, he was also instrumental in getting a dedicated email address set up on the IHEEM website through which members and other organisations keen to lend NHS E&I their support could get in contact, and similarly in ensuring that calls from NHS E&I for particular expertise or skills could be effectively
disseminated to IHEEM’s membership and the wider healthcare engineering/ estates management community.
COVID Technical Panel In response to the rapidly escalating COVID-19 situation, IHEEM has also established a COVID-19 Technical Panel, led by Pete Sellars, with support and co-ordination from Technical Platform Committee Chair, Bill Millar, and drawing on expertise from across the Institute’s broad range of Technical Platforms. Since the Panel’s inception, it has responded to a number of requests for technical input from the UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), and from other engineering bodies, such as the Royal Academy of Engineering, covering a wide range of engineering challenges being tackled in the light of COVID-19.
Online CPD recording capability Chief Operating Officer, Tania Davies, has been busy working on IHEEM’s CPD system and IT infrastructure, as well as the end-of-year accounts and audits, and on maintaining the overall governance of the Institute. One of the key benefits of IHEEM’s new IT system is that members will soon be able to record their CPD online, very much in line with Engineering Council requirements which place more stringent obligations on engineers who are members of Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs) to undertake and record their CPD activity as evidence of professional competence and ongoing learning/skills development.
Nicola Latham, IHEEM’s Business Support Manager, has been working on writing responses to key national policy alongside other PEIs, and providing feedback into the new national guidance for HTMs and HBNs, in addition to taking a lead on working with the Institute’s Technical Platforms to make sure that their recommendations are included, and liaising with NHS E&I.
