Cape Town event will dispel ‘boring’ healthcare conference trope with a ‘high-octane’ platform
Do you remember the last healthcare conference you attended? Were the stilted small talk, the cold bedside manner, and the lacklustre exhibition hall so forgettable that you are drawing a blank? That is all about to change, say the organisers of the event, when the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE) 2024 Conference is held in sunny Cape Town, South Africa, this October. The 28th edition of this globally
recognised conference will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 15 to 17 October 2024, and will attract professionals from every sphere of the healthcare engineering industry – from clinical experts and infection control bodies, to the suppliers and management teams behind the scenes. The conference is described by South African Federation of Healthcare Engineering (SAFHE) Chair, Petrus Swanepoel, as ‘a high-octane platform where the organisers promise to spark creativity, ignite innovation, and rev up healthcare service delivery to a whole new level’.
What will make the Congress a ‘must- attend’? That is quite the promise from the organising team, and we asked them to explain what will make IFHE 2024 a must-attend for the healthcare industry. The team said: “Ever mindful that Cape Town is a long-haul destination for conference attendees who may also be visiting the Mother City – as it is known by residents – for the first time, the IFHE team has thoughtfully put together several itinerary suggestions for the adventurous attendee. Imagine learning innovative ways to sharpen the connection between your aural senses and your brain, and then being able to put that into practice by listening to a talented local soprano perform in the living room of their modest home in the township. The IFHE Conference and Cape Town are the perfect duo for turning a mental experience into a cultural one. “Additionally, attendees will be able to meet with and build meaningful business connections with a global audience, and nearly 50 exhibitors in the conference’s exhibition hall.”

2024 truly apart from other healthcare estates and engineering-related conferences? IFHE 2024 Marketing Chair, Fran Fenner, believes it’s the overall ‘unique effect’ of education meeting peer-to-peer engagements. She said: “Cape Town itself is a melting pot of ideas and cultures. By hosting IFHE here, we’ll bring multiple faculties in healthcare together for a single event, and then share the unique activities and experiences that make the city a must-visit. Through this, we honour both the expansion of our industry, and our host destination. This allows for cross-pollination of ideas and thoughts, which our conference attendees will benefit immensely from.”

been phenomenal. We have some incredible keynote speakers on the bill, including Dr Paul Soko, who sits on the Board of the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA), where he chairs the Clinical Sub-committee. We have a line-up of 72 speakers from 17 countries spread over five continents. Presentations under the broader theme of Patient Centred Healthcare Engineering Design will be geared towards us
tackling some of the bigger challenges that the industry currently faces, including how design and hospital maintenance tie in with the prevention of infections and infection control. The focus here is to open attendees’ eyes and minds to how we are looking at and adapting to healthcare engineering holistically.” Interested attendees who are ready
