WEBINAR ON RAPID RESPONSES TO ESTATES AND CAPACITY CRISES THIS WINTER

WSP is a technical consulting firm who design comprehensive and sustainable solutions, and a company affiliate of IHEEM.

I

n November 2023, working collaboratively with the IHEEM West Midlands Branch, WSP

hosted a webinar titled ‘Rapid responses to estates and capacity crises this winter’. Chaired by Anisha Mayor (WSP’s UK Head of Healthcare), and presented by members of WSP’s Healthcare team, this webinar was timely as NHS Trusts and NHS Boards approached a likely period of winter pressure.

The focus of the webinar was exploring

how healthcare systems and providers could efficiently prepare for the winter pressures ahead, examining the challenges and how modern clinical, operational, and construction solutions could help to meet them, including speculative planning beyond the traditional one-year funding cycle, and systems-thinking approaches across ICBs to tackle winter crises.

This forum shared ideas on key considerations when tackling the perennial capacity pressures, along with options to facilitate rapid interventions in infrastructure delivery to mitigate risks/estates failures – at t its core, the fundamental principle being ‘keeping the lights on’ and continuing patient flow. The session included time for discussion and a Q&A, allowing engagement and open conversation between the panel and attendees.

Content delivered Along with Anisha Mayor as Chair, the webinar

featured four other speakers from WSP, each focusing in on different aspects to address this critical topic:

• Nicola Parrott – Technical Director, Healthcare Advisory.

• Jodie Orme – Technical Director, Building Services. Nicola Parrott and Patrick Gittings focused on reflections on COVID surge capacity, and the aspects of delivery that allowed us to move at a previously inconceivable rate of pace and purpose. Nicola spoke about Calon Y Drdraig (a project that provided 1750 beds across five levels), with a full service lab, MAU planned, ED, rehab, and pharmacy. Key learnings were focused on creating conditions for success, including:

• Patrick Gittings – Senior Structural Engineer. • Jenni Kirby – Director, Strategic Growth.

• A clearly articulated goal, focused on patient safety.

• Considering what was next in terms of repurposing infrastructure post-crisis.

• Proportionate governance and transparent decision making.

• Achievability and foresight. • Focus on minimising waste – time, material,
