INSTITUTE NEWS IHEEM Annual Report online
The 2021 IHEEM Annual Report has been published online to coincide with the Institute’s Annual General Meeting, which was held 'virtually' on 21 December 2021.
The Annual Report sets out the Institute’s key achievements and activities over the preceding 12 months. IHEEM CEO, Pete Sellars, said: “The Institute has enjoyed another busy and successful
year, which has seen us continue to deliver against the key objectives set out in our 5 Year Business Plan. Once again, this publication highlights and celebrates our ambitious programme and the wide range of priorities that we have delivered this year – all achieved while continuing to mitigate operational and financial risks during a period of economic challenge that organisations around the globe are facing.
“I am proud of what the Institute has delivered this year, and I hope that readers can see the hard work and commitment that the Head Office team and our volunteers have made to meet the needs of our members, and improve the quality of services that IHEEM provides.” You can access the document via the IHEEM website under ‘Latest News’ at

‘Day of celebration’ of the EFM profession planned for June media and public focus on the NHS like
A number of professional associations representing the Estates & Facilities (E&F) services across UK healthcare have jointly announced the launch of a national day to celebrate the essential work of all E&F professions in the delivery of health and social care across the UK. Initially, four organisations agreed to collaborate on this annual event, but the group has now grown to seven, and still counting.
E&F services are estimated to make up around 8% of the NHS staffing. Understandably, the public perception of the NHS is principally focused on nurses and medical staff, but the work of the E&F professionals underpinning them is vital, as they work beside their clinical colleagues directly on the ‘frontline’.
The COVID-19 pandemic raised the
never before, justifiably bringing about a wave of pride and gratitude for the efforts of everyone involved in the fight against the virus. The work of many of our E&F colleagues was reflected in the media, often for the first time, in ways that raised the profile of this staff group. These people worked diligently, often behind the scenes and out of public view, doing a wide range of critical roles, including cleaning, providing food to patients and staff, and maintaining, developing, and adapting, the physical environment to suit the rapidly changing clinical requirements.
The joint healthcare professional associations feel strongly that the critical role of the E&F professions should be recognised and represented. Therefore this new National Healthcare Estates &
Facilities Day will reflect on the work and services that the E&F sector provides, and the value it gives to patients and staff every day. This annual event will be held on the third Wednesday of June, with the first celebration day being 15 June 2022. The collective group of professional associations, NHS bodies, and supporting commercial partners, will work together to make this a huge celebration of the work of E&F services, and ensure the profile of this essential sector is raised across the UK. In addition to IHEEM, the organisations currently signed up to this initiative are: n The Health Estates & Facilities Management Association.
n The Association of Healthcare Cleaning Professionals.
n The Hospital Caterers Association. n The Institute of Decontamination Services.
n The Society of Hospital Linen Services and Laundry Managers.
n The National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers.
The group is delighted to announce that it also has the full support from the NHS across the four nations of the UK.
Please check the IHEEM website and future issues of HEJ for details on how to get involved in this special annual event for our sector.
