SHJ recruit championing greater female representation
With Engineering UK having reported last June that only 25.4% of girls aged 16-18 would consider an engineering career compared with 51.9% of boys, 23-year-old Business Development executive, Ellie Bush, from SHJ – Medical Gas Specialists, is encouraging more girls to join the engineering industry. The company said: “Quickly after joining SHJ and visiting hospitals across
the UK, it was clear to Ellie that greater female representation was needed across engineering companies. Earlier this year, she worked hard to qualify as an AP, and is excited to further her knowledge in the years to come. Her drive and determination has been recognised by SHJ, and she has recently been promoted to Business Development executive.”
Ellie Bush is especially keen that more schools and companies encourage girls and women to pursue careers in engineering. She said: “Growing up, I wasn’t encouraged to pursue STEM subjects, and engineering was seen as a job limited to men. I’m grateful that SHJ has had faith in me and supported me through my training, I find my role extremely rewarding and enjoyable.” SHJ added: “Her attitude towards her job is shared by many women in the industry; for example Atkins found that 98% of women engineers find their job rewarding.”
SHJ is calling for greater academic efforts to improve careers advice and introduce girls to the diverse range of opportunities within engineering. It also hopes more engineering companies will come together to improve female representation in the industry.
Former Finance director takes over as MAT MD
Barry McCurdy (pictured right), formerly Finance director at critical ventilation specialist, Medical Air Technology, has taken over as managing director from Steve Stott (left), who has decided to ‘step back a little’ after 13 years at the helm, and will become Chairman.
Barry McCurdy has been with Medical Air for eight years, and worked with Steve Stott following a management buy-out in 2013, which the latter led. MAT said: “As Steve’s right-hand man, Barry McCurdy has a comprehensive knowledge of the business and the market, and brings to his new position exceptional shrewdness, acumen, and an absolute commitment to the company.” As part of the changes, Adrian Parkin and Will Evans have been promoted to Contracts director and Business Development director respectively, and will work closely with the new MD as the

The winning of the £15 m contract represents the second time that the major independent engineering and services provider has been appointed by principal contractor, Kier Regional Building Services, Scotland, to support the hospital’s expansion plan. During 2020, the company delivered the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installations (MEP) for phase one of the expansion – a new six-theatre eye centre – which began receiving patients in November that year. Work on the second phase of the National Treatment Centre is under way, and is expected to be completed by June 2023. It will enable the NHS Golden Jubilee to undertake thousands of additional hip and knee replacements and other orthopaedic procedures annually, and significantly expand diagnostic testing and general surgery. A team of NG Bailey engineers, including apprentices, will be on site to support the delivery of the new three- storey development, which will include theatre suites, orthopaedic amenities, outpatient and pre-operative spaces, a surgical admissions and recovery unit, a central sterilising and processing department, and a new endoscopy unit. Modern Methods of Construction are being widely used, while many of the service installations – including heavy duty service modules, plant room skids, and plant room frames – are being produced at NG Bailey’s specialist offsite manufacturing facility. The building will also incorporate high-efficiency heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, presence- controlled lighting systems, and a heat recovery system serving the theatres.
