Project to create ‘digital ambulance of the future’
Cardiff-based connectivity specialist, Excelerate Technology, is leading the consortium on ‘one of the most exciting projects ever undertaken on behalf of NHS ambulance services’. The aim of the €5.7 m initiative, co- funded by the European Space Agency ARTES 5G Strategic Programme Line and the UK Space Agency, is to create the prototype for ‘a pioneering and always connected and cloud-based digital ambulance of the future’. The Hybrid Connex Digital Ambulance of the Future project is a technology initiative working with the NHS to provide the UK ambulance sector with a resilient connectivity solution which combines 4G, 5G and satellite connections, meaning that the crew on board the vehicle will never be offline (with 5G connectivity as the primary connection, falling back to 4G when 5G is unavailable, and then to satellite connectivity ‘in deep rural locations and total not-spots’). Excelerate Technology says this “will enable a whole range of applications to work together to significantly improve patient experiences, while transforming a large part of the way ambulance services deliver ‘see and treat’ care”. It said: “With the ability of a connected ambulance to function as a remote consultation room, paramedics can access medical records

remotely through secure connection to the Health and Social Care Network, and call on support specialist clinicians to assess patient conditions and provide treatment en-route to hospitals and medical centres.” The ‘connected ambulance’ also supports the deployment of new technology in the field, such as Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, with data transmitted to healthcare facilities in real- time. Access to this information will allow staff in hospitals and medical centres to prepare for patient arrivals, and adjust preparations should conditions change.
VINCI wins £11 m UHCW ED contract
The Coventry and Rugby Hospital Company has awarded VINCI Building the £11 m contract to increase the emergency capacity at University Hospital, Coventry.
The Emergency Department, one of the UK’s busiest, will be adapted to provide a larger Children’s Emergency provision, and more space in the Adult Emergency Department, including reconfiguration of the resuscitation area. Improvements will be made to the Rapid Assessment and Treatment and relatives’ spaces, along with new staff changing facilities. Adaptions will also be made to the Medicine Decisions Unit (MDU) to
create a dedicated reception, alongside providing three consultation rooms. IHP (the alliance between VINCI Construction UK and Sir Robert McAlpine) is currently undertaking a £29 m, three-storey new-build extension at the Manchester Royal Infirmary Emergency Department, including theatres, for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. It has also been appointed by Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for the £18 m design and construction of the new Urgent and Emergency Care Department and Paediatric Assessment Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital (see render image), and by Calderdale and Huddersfield Solutions for the £15 m design and construction of a proposed new Emergency Department at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Works have commenced on all these projects, with completion set for 2023 on the Coventry, Chesterfield, and Huddersfield schemes, and 2024 at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
