New Project Support Officer from Kosovo for IHEEM head office
IHEEM’s latest recruit to its head office team grew up and was educated in Kosovo, achieving a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, and working for the US Embassy in both HR and as an event promoter, as well as in human rights. Kaltrina Azemi, who is part of a large
family, and started work with the Institute in early March as Project Support Officer, first visited the UK in 2014, subsequently dividing her time between Portsmouth and her home city of Pristina for several years. An enthusiastic self-taught cook, she has spent some of her time in the UK working as a chef. She said: “Having studied Business at high school in Pristina, I went on to get a degree in Public Administration at the AAB College in the city. At one stage I was quite interested in politics, but, following the Kosovo conflict in 1998-1999, there was a period when good jobs were hard to come by there. I have some vivid memories of the war.” She continued: “I first came to the UK
to visit my older sister, Kujtime, who has lived in Portsmouth for about 20 years.

“I helped her with child care, and stayed with her regularly while here. On one occasion on returning to the UK, I met my now wife, Alice, who was studying, and thereafter I lived in the UK for much of
the time. I gained some useful training in catering in a number of part-time roles as a chef, and was in fact working as a chef immediately prior to joining IHEEM. I now live with Alice, who I married in 2019, in Portsmouth.” Kaltrina said that when she saw the
Project Support Officer role advertised, ‘it sounded like a great opportunity to move into a new field of work’. She added: “I love working with a range
of different people. Working for the US Embassy in Kosovo I regularly arranged and attended public events, including with Ambassadors, which I really enjoyed. In this role I will be supporting IHEEM’s key projects, handling the associated administration, and working closely with Chief Operating Officer, Tania Davies, Business Support Manager, Nicola Latham, and Events & Marketing Officer, Yasmin Brewer. I miss my home city and Kosovo, and my friends and family there (particular thanks go to my cousin, Valentina Shahini, for her support), but am looking forward to my new role, and to discovering more about the Institute, its work, activities, goals, and membership.”
