Te leaders of five of Oklahoma’s biggest tribes have united to oppose state Governor Kevin Stitt’s plan to renegotiate gaming compacts in the US state by the end of the year


Te compact currently allows the state to take four to six per cent in fees from tribe-owned casinos, equating to about $140m each year.

Tribal leaders, including Bill John Baker, Principal Chief, Te Cherokee Nation, Bill Anoatubby, Governor, Te Chickasaw Nation, Gary Batton, Chief, Te Choctaw Nation, James R. Floyd, Principal Chief, Te Muscogee (Creek) Nation and Greg Chilcoat, Chief, Te Seminole Nation said they are concerned that fees will increase following a renegotiation of the gaming compacts in Oklahoma.


Te Inter-Tribal Council of the Five Civilised Tribes signed a joint resolution mid-July to oppose Stitt's proposition. Tey said: “We have considered the state of Oklahoma a trustworthy partner through the years. Working together we have made strides in building a better, stronger and more prosperous Oklahoma for the benefit of the hundreds of thousands of members of our Tribes who live and work here as well as all residents of this great State. We can trace the starting point of our constructive partnership to the carefully crafted and balanced approach represented in the current compact negotiated in a respectful manner between the State of Oklahoma and the sovereign Tribes.
