Chinatown 1960s
San Francisco’s Chinatown, the nation’s oldest, has drawn visitors to the bustling center of the city for more than 160 years. In fact, Grant Avenue (pictured here), the area’s main thoroughfare, was San Francisco’s first street. Spurred by the Gold Rush and the Transcontinental Railroad, thousands of new immigrants settled in Chinatown to open restaurants, temples, markets and shops. In 1906, after the Great Earthquake destroyed much of the historic neighborhood, residents quickly rebuilt rather than relocate to a more remote area of the city. The “new” Chinatown included Edwardian-style buildings with Chinese decorations designed to lure more tourists to the neighborhood.
2017
Present-day Chinatown hasn’t changed much. The square-mile ’hood is still home to many tasty bakeries and markets as well as knickknack shops meant to lure in hordes of tourists as they make their way to the Dragon Gate entrance. But a new generation of restaurateurs—inspired by San Francisco’s legendary Cecilia Chiang (Mandarin Restaurant)—is making Chinatown the city’s newest culinary destination. misterjius.com) offers a contemporary twist on Chinese fare using California ingredients from organic local farms, while China Live (644 Broadway St; 415-788-8188,

The world’s tallest public art installation lights up the top of Salesforce Tower.
THE SECOND-TALLEST building in California, Salesforce Tower has already changed the San Francisco skyline, but when the building opens this fall, it will come with a little something extra: a nine-story, twinkling LED display. It’s being touted as the tallest public–art installation in the
United States, and local artist Jim Campbell (the man who brought you the Bay Lights) has been working on the project for three years. Some 11,000 LED lights will be placed on the unoccupied top floors of the skyscraper, where each night, the lights will sync to project unique images. While some of the images will be prerecorded, many will actually be photos from earlier that day—sent to the installation via six cameras posted around the city.
