Most under-rated jockey and trainer? I have always admired Kevin Sexton’s style of riding, which I think replicates the likes of Paul Carberry. He is very polished, stylish, and extremely talented. He gives a horse every chance to get into their rhythm, I think he sits quiet and doesn’t interfere over an obstacle and you can never be too sure how much horse he has leſt when he’s a furlong and a half from home and hasn’t quiet gone for the full drive position. It was great to see him display his talents on the big stage at the Cheltenham Festival last year aboard Belfast Banter when winning the County Hurdle and again at Aintree in Grade 1 company. Dermot McLoughlin is a trainer who does extremely well with the stable of horses he has. Possibly considered a relatively small yard compared to the larger dominating stables, Dermot recorded his biggest success last year when Freewheelin Dylan romped home in the Irish Grand National, leaving the trainer in eighth position on Ireland’s Leading Trainers table for last season. Statistically the yard
is having a better season than last, and we are only just halfway through the season. I believe that for the calibre of horse that Dermot trains his results speak for themselves and he is a trainer that stands out to me as exceling in his field.
What’s your one wish for racing? That people continue to enjoy the sport for generations to come.
