REBECCA MENZIES
On the gallops at Howe Hills
we’ve had them since they were babies and trained them the way we’ve wanted to. “Ferdy always had an end plan. His horses
always improved as the season went on and they were trained to peak in the spring. From our own training methods, we’ve found our horses really start to fly in December and January and then they seem to hold their form right through until the spring. That’s because we don’t train them too hard early in the season on so there’s plenty leſt in the tank for aſter Christmas.” Menzies, whose 2021 Flat score of 21 was also
a personal best, added: “Every year I just want to get better and a few years ago if you asked if I would have more than 40 horses I’d have said ‘no chance’. But now, because of the people and the infrastructure in place, we can have this larger number of horses. “The more horses coming through the door
the more chance you have of unearthing one for Cheltenham or Aintree. I’m from the north-west and I’d love to win the Grand National – a couple of our owners have talked about finding a suitable horse – but obviously that could take a little time! “The best horse we’ve had so far is Stormy Girl and she broke the six-furlong track record when winning a Listed race at Pontefract in 2020 (watch here). From a very small number of runners, we had a debutante two-year-old winner (Miss Calculation) last season and the Flat is something I’m very keen

on – we seem to come across a good one every year. “For 2022, we’ve got three two-year-old fillies
in training for Sir Robert Ogden and one for a syndicate plus three juvenile colts in pre-training. There are some lovely pedigrees in there and hopefully we might be able to uncover a little diamond among them, that’s very exciting. “And of the older horses, Dogged had some
decent form early doors and kind of lost his way a little bit. We got him at the October Sales out of David Elsworth’s yard and he’s the type of profile I like to buy. He’s got proven ability and hopefully the change of scenery can sweeten him up. He’s one to look forward to and possibly a race like the Carlisle Bell might be his target. “We got Three Platoon from Roger Varian’s
at the same sales and he’s a nice four-year colt by Kingman. He’s already won for us at Wolverhampton and he should make a nice stayer. We might aim him at the Northumberland Vase in June as I’m not sure his mark would see him get into the Plate. He’s possibly unexposed over one- and-a-three-quarters miles to two miles.” Menzies is also looking forward to some summer jumping action and Hasty Brook is a name to bear in mind.
She said: “We bought him privately out of Joseph O’Brien’s and he won a maiden hurdle nicely at Clonmel in January. That race was over two miles and he looked like he could stay further.
