Qore, with a project to produce Qira bio-based 1,4-butanediol (BDO) for polyester polyols. Qira allows for both food and materials production, said Andrea Vanderhoff, Director of Technology and Sustainability at Qore, during her presentation at the conference. Field corn can be fractionated for many uses, she said, including animal feed, ethanol and industrial purposes. Qore is a joint venture of Cargill and Helm and in July it opened its plant next to Cargill’s operations in the Iowa corn belt with the capacity to produce 65,000 tonnes/year of Qira BDO using dent corn grown primarily within 100 miles of the site. Nearly all the plant’s electricity needs are provided by wind power, she said.
a minimum 25% bio-based content is necessary in the eyes of consumers, but ideally the proportion should be 50% or higher.
An objection sometimes levelled at companies making materials from plants is that the practice competes for land with food crop production. Susterra is derived
from dent corn (or field corn), which has food and non-food uses, and Primient Covation supports the Truterra program which helps US farmers with land stewardship and their sustainability objectives. Development of sustainability in farming is also central to another US company,
