Swedish Plastic Recycling to open major Site Zero facility

After an investment of around SEK 1bn ($90m), on 15 November Swedish Plastic Recycling (Svensk Plaståtervin- ning) is set to open Site Zero, which it claims will be the world’s largest and most modern plastic recycling facility. The existing plant in Motala is

already one of the most advanced in Europe, but it is claimed that after

IN BRIEF...

In December, Société Générale des Techniques (SGT) will begin construc- tion of a new production unit in Rezé, France which the company says will more than double production of its EFSA-approved rPET to 26,000 tonnes/yr by mid-2024. The plant will be equipped with the latest technologies, including the liquid state polycondensa- tion process from NGR in Austria. www.sgt-pet.com

Vinyl alternative for records

Plastics distributor Albis and Greenyl, an Italian manufac- turer of sustainable vinyl, have developed a solution to the growing demand for eco-friendly products in the record industry. For the records, Albis is supplying a Skypet CR grade from SK Chemicals

which contains up to 99% chemically recycled PET waste (mass balance approach), resulting in a significant saving of 7.1kg of CO2e/kg compared to PVC. Records made from Skypet can also be fully recycled, making them a sustainable drop-in solution because

the material strengthens the circular economy beyond the end of the product’s life. Greenyl said this shows “how the material loop can be closed with the right ambition.” https://eng.sk.com www.greenyl.com www.albis.com

expansion, Site Zero will be able to separate and process up to 12 types of plastics compared to the usual three or four at similar plants meaning that practically all plastics on the Swedish packaging market can be recycled in a circular way. “Site Zero exceeds all expectations,” said Mattias Philipsson, CEO of

Swedish Plastic Recycling. “We are now entering a new era of plastic recycling. This plant will be the driving force for the transition that needs to be made worldwide to significantly reduce climate impact and the need for fossil plastic raw materials, and to make plastics part of the circular economy.” www.svenskplastatervinning.se
