Germany sets tax rates for single-use plastics fund


Following countries such as Spain and the UK, on 28 September 2023 Germany passed a law determining levy rates for its new single use plastics fund. The authorisation to issue regulations is anchored in the Single-Use Plastic Fund Act of May 2023, the law creating the legal basis for the establishment and administration of the single-use plastic fund by the Federal Environment Agency. Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke said: “The costs for cleaning and disposal of carelessly thrown away plastic have so far been borne by the general public. That will change from 2024. Anyone who bases their business on bringing disposable plastic products onto the market will then contribute to the municipalities’ collection and cleaning costs.” Based on specified tax
