Braskem works with retail chain
Polyolefins producer Braskem and GPA Group, Brazil’s largest retail chain, have started a project to recycle 60 tpa of post-con- sumer packaging for use in the new container for Qualitá stain remover. The waste deposited in
GPA stores, including Extra and Pão de Açúcar super- markets, will be collected, sorted and sent to a recycling company. The resulting polymer is composed of 70% recycled material and 30% virgin polyethylene. The resin is then sold to the plastic processing company, which produces the product packaging and fills the packages. The project is part of
Braskem’s Wecycle platform which supports businesses and initiatives for the utilisation of plastic waste in Brazil. ❙

Rapid takes production back in-house in US
Rapid Granulator, based in Sweden, says it is making one of its biggest ever investments to bring US production in-house. “This is a major move in [our] most important market,” it said. Rapid said it would start
production of its full product range of granulators and shredders at a facility in Pittsburgh, in the second quar- ter of this year. The 6,000 m² facility also includes a 325 m² showroom, plus a warehouse and offices. The company previously
had its own production facility in Illinois but has been
out-sourcing production in the US since 2008. This has been a successful strategy and 2016 was a record year for Rapid in the US as well as globally, said Jim Hoffman, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, at Rapid Granulator. “But we are very ambitious. The North Ameri- can market right now is healthy and growing, but we want to grow even faster.” He said “it is clear that there is a spirit here to favour Made in America” and Rapid is support- ing that with new jobs and local sourcing. The new facility is located close to Pittsburgh airport and has enough space
for all of Rapid’s range of equipment for granulation and shredding of plastics production waste and for recycling post-consumer material. Rapid said it is not revealing the size of the investment, planned output or employment numbers.
The US investment comes
soon after Rapid added a major extension to test facilities at its headquarters in Bredaryd, Sweden. Both initiatives are the result of an important strategic investment made by Lifco, which bought Rapid two years ago. ❙

plastics recycling plant for Ekokem at its Riihimäki facility in Finland. The plant is
designed for throughput of 1,500-3,000 kg/h, recycling post-consumer HDPE and PP waste, and LDPE and LLDPE plastic film materials. As well as recycling, the unit offers
environmental and construction services. ❙
