Size reduction | shredders Modularity also extends to three different cutting
systems: Quad Cut, Claw, and Power Wedge. The unique Quad Cut system for general plastic waste features a solid knife that allows the full use of all four cutting edges. The knives are supported by a sacrificial washer in order to protect the rotor should non-plastic material accidently enter the cutting chamber. The Raptors can also be configured in the Rapid Duo
concept, with a floor-standing granulator located directly beneath the output of the shredder. Hellweg Maschinenbau is another company that has
combined technologies in a single unit. At K 2016, the company presented its new MDSG 1000/600 BR shredder-granulator. The “BR” stands for “Brocken”, the German word for lumps, as the machine has been designed for single-stage shredding and granulation of solid start-up blocks, as well as pipes and
sheets. The unit uses a peeling and cutting method which prevents the rotor blades from cutting too deeply into the plastic material to be granulated. Depending on the material to be granulated, achievable throughput ranges from 800 to 3,000 kg/h, allowing for 5-20 mm diameter sieve perforation and 75-90 kW installed power rating. Zerma has developed its ZIS shredders with large sized parts such as IBCs, pallets and big barrels in mind. It says that while the ZIS can be used for in house recycling in, for example, blow moulding operations, it is also versatile enough to be used for general plastics recycling.
The ZIS series shredders are single shaft shredders
with a large internal volume. The redesigned hydraulic pusher system creates about 35% more space in the cutting chamber while increasing the power and speed of the ram itself. The machines are equipped with a 457 mm
diameter Zerma E rotor with widths ranging from 1,200 to 2,000 mm. As with Zerma’s ZSS machines, the ZIS rotor is driven via an oversized gearbox. The completely closed welded steel housing increases the stability and avoids material spillage. The company says: “The ZIS inherits all of
the advantages of the Zerma knife and knife holder design as well as standard features such as outboard bearings, hydraulic screen cradle, its easy maintainability and advanced controls.” Herbold Meckesheim showed a
shredder at K 2016 as part of its display of five “columns” (stages) for efficient and cost-effective recycling of plastic waste. The company says the HGM series shredders are designed for the size

reduction of viscous materials or materials containing foreign bodies where traditional shredders do not yield the desired end product. The HGM series is available as a wet shredder for abrasive materials, such as agricultural film and WEEE. “HGM granulators are machines which combine the
advantages of shredders (blunt cut, relatively insensi- tive to foreign bodies) and grinders (shredding by means of cutting, and therefore suitable for soft and tough materials),” says Herbold Meckesheim. The other four columns in the K 2016 display were:
granulation for further size reduction; fine grinding with an impact disc pulveriser; washing, separating and drying, using hydrocyclone and step dryer technologies; and agglomerating with the company’s Plastcompactor compacting machine. Herbold Meckesheim installed a combined shredder and wash line at Rodepa Plastics in the Netherlands early in 2016. Input material is post-industri- al film waste with contamination levels up to almost 50%. In order to separate the contamination from film in the washing line as early as the pre-size reduction step, a wet shredder was specially designed for Rodepa. The hydrocyclone separation step further achieves a high degree of decontami- nation of the film.
