RecyClass updates packaging design for recycling guidance


Following intensive inde- pendent testing, the European cross-industry initiative RecyClass has released an updated version of its Design for Recycling Guidelines for plastics packaging, with restructured sections on decoration to bring them in line with recent legislative develop- ments at European level. Notable additions to the guidelines include a more precise definition of adhesives for labels on HDPE, PP and PS rigid packaging, and updated recommendations for polyolefin foamed liners. A technical review of HDPE tube size sorting will also be available following the results shared by US research group Stina. For PE films, EVOH/


metallisation and laminat- ing adhesive combinations can now be directly certified without testing, provided they follow recommendations. Additionally, PP-based plastomers are now recog- nised as fully compatible with the PE packaging recycling stream if they represent up to 15% of the total weight of the packag- ing. Also, recommendations around PET bottles have been refined with better definitions for clear, light blue, and coloured transpar- ent PET bottles, together with additional guidance on closures. “Considering the recent legislative developments at
