criteria. The cavity-related inspection is carried out with up to nine high-resolution cameras. Netstal said sophisticated and unique tests, such as the patented temperature measurement and the non-contact micro-hole inspection, lead to com- plete quality assurance of closure production. Christopher Navratil, CTO at Alltrista’s parent company, said: “This cap application is a testament to our innovative strength and unbridled desire to keep pushing the technological boundaries. We are proud that in this project and together with the experts from Netstal, Z-moulds and Intravis, we were able to increase productivity by at least 30%. For us, this is a prime example of how companies from the USA can work successfully with partners from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.” Alltrista will be present at the Netstal booth during NPE 2024 with its own staff to provide information from the customer’s perspective.
Optimised moulds The Fakuma 2023 show in Friedrichshafen, Germany last October was also a showcase for technology companies to demonstrate their caps expertise. In the medical sector, Engel produced needle protec- tion caps on an E-mac 265/130 machine equipped with a cleanroom package. The 96-cavity mould in the demonstration was developed by Kebo specifi- cally for secondary packaging, which does not directly touch the active ingredient and is mainly used to protect and identify the medical device. Engel said that moulds with a large number of
cavities require high precision and dynamics in the injection process, ensured in this example by Engel’s new injection unit 265. The cycle time in the demonstration was 6.2 s. At Fakuma 2023, hot runner group Oerlikon
HRSflow showed its expertise in the field of caps and closures with a multi-cavity system for produc- tion of 72 beverage bottle caps. The company said its new Vf nozzle series enables very short cycle
times of 2.2 to 3.5 s while at the same time ensur- ing maximum process reliability due to control and optimum balancing of the filling process. Specially developed for HDPE caps and clo-
sures, the Vf nozzles of the new multicavity line from Oerlikon HRSflow are suitable for part weights from 0.5 g to 8 g. A special nozzle tip enables optimum control in the gate area and improves cycle time. The separate replaceability of the nozzle tip makes maintenance particularly fast and cost-effective, said the company. Other features include rheologically optimised hot runner geometries to increase reactivity and the effective- ness of the system. Special inserts minimise the time required for colour changes while keeping reject rates low, which contributes to the sustain- ability of production even with particularly critical colours, said the company.
