AMI’s new Global Market for BOPP Film report explores capacity, production and demand to
2030.Susannah Owen provides a summary of its findings
BOPP film market continues to show strength
In 2025, global demand for BOPP film reached nearly 11 million tonnes, continuing a steady upward trajectory despite a succession of chal- lenges. Looking ahead, the global BOPP films market is expected to maintain steady growth despite ongoing uncertainty. Crucially, BOPP remains difficult to substitute in
many of its core applications due to its unique combination of performance, cost, and processing advantages. Its sustained growth is underpinned by the fundamental global trend of increasing access to packaged goods. Overall, global demand is forecast to grow at
more than 3% through to 2030 supported by BOPP’s strong position in essential food packaging, its role in the expanding global snacks sector as well as greater penetration in retort pouches and high barrier packaging applications. In non-packaging applications, BOPP consump-
tion is growing strongly in emerging high-tech and new energy applications, where technical advance- ments are helping the film to play an increasingly important role in future growth applications. India and South-East Asia are expected to deliver

the strongest volume growth to 2030. India’s urbanisation and continued expansion of organised retail benefit all packaging film substrates. North East Asia’s value growth is supported by a
world-leading position in technical BOPP films and adjacent industries.
China’s position
Chinese volume additions support domestic demand for speciality films and reinforce a strong competitive position in export markets. The strategic focus is now shifting towards technology, efficiency and easier-to-recycle structures. Already the largest market for demand, produc- tion and exports, China installed more than 400,000 tonnes of new capacity in 2025. Domestic consump- tion has become an important engine of growth. Anti-involution measures aim to curb destructive below-cost competition and industrial overcapac- ity. Investment is expected to continue, but with greater emphasis on technological advancement and efficiency upgrades under the government’s 15th five-year plan.
