RECYCLING AND GRANULATORS | MACHINERY

Granulators add second life to plastic products

Recent developments in recycling include a high-volume model for wet granulation, high-throughput shredders and a flow measurement system that boosts efficiency

While recycling of extruded products – including film and sheet – continues to increase, there is also a critical need to recycle in-house scrap to cut material costs. Wursi of Spain shreds around 1,500 tonnes of PE and PP into regranulate every month, using two Weima W5.14 single-shaft shredders on its recycling line. It first processes sorted plastic waste manually and feeds it into the two shredders – which shreds the material to 30-100mm pieces. The shredder is designed for demanding plastic

applications. A V-rotor with a diameter of 500mm and a length of 1,400mm ensures uniform shredding even with tough materials. A Siemens PLC control system with touch panel allows precise adjustment of operating parameters. A hydraulically opening screen basket and inspection flap help to reduce downtime during maintenance or screen changes Wursi uses interchangeable screen segments

that can react flexibly to material differences – an advantage with changing polyolefin streams, it says.

Online flow

Hellweg Maschinenbau has begun integrating an online flow measurement system called Smart Flow into its products.

It complements information already available via

Hellweg’s Smart Control system for bearing tempera- tures, speed and power consumption. Together, they provide a basis for Hellweg’s next step: integration of self-learning AI modules. These will calculate the optimum ratio between material properties, feed and required power during granulator operation. The control system will then independently regulate the machine parameters to maximise energy efficiency without human intervention. “The importance of the grinding process for successful recycling is still far too often underestimated,” said Mark Hellweg, managing director of Hellweg. The energy consumption of the granulators used for this purpose is not specified on the type plate. It is a free variable that can be adjusted to
