MACHINERY | BLOWN FILM DIES

mid-range components and up to 25% higher than high-end competitors, the Karat cooling ring enables a boost in productivity with good profile tolerances and high film quality, says the company.

Air ring for FFS Other air ring producers have also announced new developments – such as UK-based Octagon, which has introduced its SmartLip One TL FFS air ring for production of form-fill-seal (FFS) film. Unlike conventional film, FFS film has greater thickness and durability, which deliver mechanical strength and long-term stability. The heavier resin layers raise mechanical properties, including tear resistance – which prevents ruptures – puncture resistance (to protect products from external damage) and dimensional stability, ensuring package integrity over time, says Octagon. SmartLip One TL FFS has a triple lip design with a specific lip set developed for FFS film conditions. This configuration allows: uniform distribution of cooling air flow; better control of bubble forma- tion; and, superior stability during production. The device allows throughputs of up to 600 kg/h with a die size of 180mm. This means a production

increase of up to 45% compared to conventional systems – for greater operational efficiency and return on investment.

Octagon says the quality of the film produced shows several improvements, including a 70% reduction of thickness profile tolerances; higher film uniformity, lower scrap rate and greater consistency in final product quality. It was also designed with the operator experi- ence in mind. For instance, adjustment of upward and downward air flows is via two wheels, for intuitive and precise control. An elevation device facilitates equipment cleaning and maintenance, while a single air inlet simplifies installation and reduces infrastructure costs.

Modular basket Meanwhile, Hosokawa Alpine has developed a modular calibration basket for stabilising and calibrating the film bubble above the frost zone on blown film lines. The calibration basket plays a key role in

production. Directly after exiting the die, it stabi- lises the blown film bubble and defines its circum- ference. In this way, it guides the film bubble and
