Medical cover The cover of a surgical waste management system used in hospital operating rooms was the overall winner of an annual contest run by the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) in the USA. The product, from Illinois-based Profile Plastics, was made by heavy gauge thermo-
forming, using female pressure form tools. It improved cosmetic appearance, reduced the number of formed parts, and reduced both cost and assembly time – due mainly to moulded-in parts from complex tools that were not possible with previous generation
parts made using male tools. Winners of other awards included: an innovative clamshell from Jamestown Plastics, which can easily to opened and closed with one hand; a thin-gauge, vacuum-formed TPU medical liner from Barger, which protects medical orthopaedic implants; and a dash- board assembly for low entry heavy truck cabs, from Brentwood Industries, made of 20 components – of which six are thermoformed from LyondellBasell’s E340 TPO material.
