PLASTIC POUCHES | PROCESSING
pouches – which are typically lighter or more recyclable than alternatives like glass, cans or composite cartons.
It can be used for many applications such as liquid detergents and dishwasher and laundry tablets. Pouches are typically all-PE designs that are rotogravure- or flexo-printed and suitable for VFFS.
available in 20- and 25-micron versions for both duplex as triplex structures. They are PFAS-free and available in gloss and matt finishes.
Flexible effect Alessandro D’Agostino and Vicken Boniekerian, of Mondi Consumer Flexibles, said that the new PPWR rules from the EU will have a huge effect on pouch design and production. For said PPWR would affect a typical pouch with a spout in several ways, including: a ban on the use of PFAS chemicals; packaging minimisation; and rules on recyclability, recycled content and labelling. “PPWR mandates a higher level of recycled
content, companies need to secure access to PCR materials,” they said. “This involves ensuring supply chain readiness, managing volume allocations, and PCR volume ramp-ups.” Ways of solving this include using a mass balance system to trace recycled content for chemi- cally recycled materials, as well as ISCC certification and system digitalisation. “Planning early is key – by securing PCR supply and avoiding bottlenecks,” they added. Solving these problems can ensure that users can take full advantage of flexible packaging like
Compostable pouches Instead of creating a single-material, recyclable film for pouches, another sustainable approach is to make it compostable. If it composts – in either a home or industrial process – this overcomes the need for physical recycling. Gaëlle Cavalié, technical sales engineer at testing and inspection company Normec, told delegates that 74% of Europe’s food waste is landfilled or incinerated – and 10% of the food waste is related to date marking. “This means food that is discarded together with
the packaging,” she said. However, compostable packaging could help to
increase the amount of food waste that is sent to composting facilities instead of landfill/incineration, she said. “Compostable food contact materials can significantly increase the biowaste collection rate for all expired food,” she added. Only a few items – such as teabags and stickers for fruit and vegetables – must be compostable under PPWR (by around 2028) – while Member States are free to decide on other items (such as lightweight carrier bags).
