PHA straws Tous les Jours, a US-based chain of French-Asian cafés, has begun using straws made of PHA from CJ Biomaterials (CJ BMS). Since introducing the PHACT PHA straws at Tous
les Jours stores across South Korea in 2023, CJ began developing a PHA compound that could meet certifications for both compostability and marine biodegradability. In 2024, it launched PHACT CB0400A, a PHA compound made from CJ grades of amorphous and semi-crystalline PHA. From here, it collaborated with ANU Drinkware, a manufacturer of sustainable straws, to make the new straws for Tous les Jours. “This launch highlights how a collaboration between brands, converters and biopolymer manu-
facturers can accelerate the commercialisation of biobased products,” said Max Senechal, chief commercial officer at CJ Biomaterials. The new CB0400A compound uses CJ’s amor-
phous grade of PHA, PHACT A1000P, to reduce brittleness in straws and increase durability compared with incumbent compostable polymers. In CB0400A, aPHA is used in combination with S1000P, a semi-crystalline grade of PHA launched last year. This compound also expands the portfolio of PHACT grades available for straw manufacturing
