Size boost Itib Machinery of Italy has extend- ed its range of corrugators with a new model that makes double-wall PE, PP and PVC pipes with an internal diameter of 800mm. With the FV800SH9 – the
largest in its range – Itib says that it now covers almost 90% of the demand of pipes in infrastructure. The model incorporates a number of technical solutions including: a shuttle mould handling system; integral cooling with chilled water that flows inside the moulds; and a vacuum-assisted forming system. The shuttle system is an alternative to the more traditional configuration of the complete mould chain. Each mould half is mounted on a steel support that runs on ground, nitrided and auto- matically lubricated plates. In the central area – which forms and cools the pipe – there are six pairs of moulds moving at production speed. In addition, there is a pair in the opening area, where the pipe leaves the corruga- tor; one in the closing area, near the extrusion head where the half-shells join; and another that returns four times faster than the production speed to re-start the cycle. This makes nine pairs of moulds for a complete set. In the FV800, fast, high-precision connectors engage with the moulds in the forming area. The connectors accompany the moulds moving at the same speed on rails, allowing the cooling water to flow into the channels. At the end of the cooling section, the connectors are released to free the pair of moulds on opening.
While maintaining the same number of mould- pairs as its predecessor, the FV800 has a cooling channel that is about 50% larger, a cooling circuit inside the moulds optimised for greater heat-ex- change efficiency, and a vacuum distribution circuit for a better vacuum distribution. A cooling circuit outside the mould has a
thermoregulation system that keeps the moulds at the optimal temperature. In addition, by entering the diameter of the pipe to be produced, it is possible to make the corrugator position itself automatically at the correct height.

Inline inspection Pixargus of Germany showed a number of inline inspection systems for pipes and profiles at the recent NPE show in the US – including one for corrugated pipe. ProfilControl7 Corrugated Tube can inspect the
entire surface structure of corrugated pipe – includ- ing peaks, valleys and the transition areas in between – with high precision. The measuring head features eight high-performance cameras that capture the entire surface of corrugated tubing from different angles.
It is designed to inspect corrugated and spiral tubes up to 30mm in diameter. “What used to be the most difficult terrain for quality inspection is no longer a problem,” said the company.
Its inspection algorithms automatically recog- nise and differentiate between plain and corru- gated tube sections, ensuring that defects such as holes, dents, blisters, lumps, scratches and cracks are reliably detected. Corrugated pipe can also consist of periodically
recurring sections with features that require special attention. For this purpose, the software includes an algorithm that recognises where these sections start and end, and automatically adapts the inspection parameters. This accelerates handling at the production line, especially in the case of highly diversified product mixes, it says. Earlier this year, Pixargus was bought by Citex
Holding, which already has expertise in optical profile inspection through its Inoex subsidiary – a specialist in X-ray and radar technology.
